Costume design is storytelling, and in the new book Dressing the Story, costume designer and CDG member Debra McGuire offers a deeply personal look into the creative process behind some of film and television’s most beloved projects. ✨

Written with producer Jim Stark, the book explores how costume design shapes character, emotion, and visual storytelling, drawing from McGuire’s remarkable career across productions including Friends, Freaks and Geeks, The Morning Show, Anchorman, Knocked Up, Superbad, and more. Through candid conversations and behind-the-scenes insight, Dressing the Story highlights the collaborative artistry at the heart of costume design. 🎬

“The most exciting part of writing this book has been the opportunity to share it with my creative community — the extraordinary tribe of Costume Designers and Costumers who understand the passion, sacrifice, artistry, and endurance this work requires. Throughout my journey, I have been lifted up by your generosity, wisdom, humor, and unwavering support.

Ours is a collaborative art form built on trust, instinct, craftsmanship, and heart. None of us does it alone. We learn from one another, inspire one another, and carry each other through the impossible days and magical moments alike.

Thank you for being part of my village, my creative family, and the fabric of this story. This book belongs to all of us,” shares McGuire.

Spider-Noir is here, featuring costume design by CDG member Trayce Gigi Field. 🕸️✨

Spider-Noir perfectly blends a film’s noir atmosphere with the striking style of a comic book world. From the darkly humorous hero to the villains, to a glamorous lounge singer wearing vintage-inspired looks influenced by couture houses, every character carries their own distinct palette inspired by the comics.

“Spider Noir is honestly my most beautiful work to date. Creating the first live-action Spider-Man Noir was a dream come true! Because this was the first live-action Spider Noir, I knew we needed to get the super suit and mask exactly right for the fans. I took a grounded realism approach to the Spider’s overall look. Ben was in the military and fought in France. His vest and pants are French-inspired motorcycle gear, since he rode motorcycles. The mask inspiration came from one of Ben’s 1920s wartime military knit sweaters. It took four levels of digital printing to create the knit-sweater look on the mask.

I loved creating a heightened version of the 1930s for the show’s overall look. I had the best crew ever on this project! From every background character to every principal actor, we gave all of our passion and attention to detail. You truly see all the gorgeous work on screen,” shared Field.
