Maybe Star remembers. ❤
If you know Star, you know Star does NOT like sharing his yard.
Star came to SKC two years ago completely emaciated, with a body condition score of just 1. He was also suffering from a severe ulcer in one eye, which had to be removed immediately. In April 2026, Star's remaining eye was removed, leaving him completely blind.
Today, Star has his own safe little world at SKC.
His yard. His routine. His people.
And generally speaking, he would prefer that other horses stay out of it. Grumpy might be an understatement.
Then, three weeks ago, Laredo arrived.
Just like Star once did, Laredo came to us emaciated with a body condition score of 1.
And something unexpected happened.
Star let him in. ❤️
No, we're not going to tell you they're suddenly inseparable best friends. That's not Star.
But this completely blind horse, who has never wanted another horse sharing his space, has peacefully allowed Laredo to live right there beside him.
And we can't help but wonder…
Does Star somehow know?
Can he sense something familiar in Laredo? Does he somehow recognize the weakness of a horse whose body has been deprived of what it needed for far too long?
Maybe we're putting human emotions on a horse.
But maybe we're not giving horses enough credit. ❤️
On Monday, Dr. Olivia and Mikayla from Shelton Veterinary Clinic came out to examine Laredo, and we received wonderful news: he is doing great and gaining weight exactly as he should!
It's only been three weeks. Laredo still has a journey ahead of him.
But he's safe.
He's eating.
He's gaining.
He's healing.
And somehow, he earned permission to share the yard of one very particular, very grumpy blind horse who once arrived at SKC in almost exactly the same physical condition.
Maybe Star remembers what it felt like to be a body score 1.
And maybe, in his own very Star-like way, he's telling Laredo:
You can stay here. You're safe now. ❤️
