Another Beautiful Day With Desire Thy Portion

Today was another beautiful day for Desire Thy Portion. We had the privilege of sharing a meal and meaningful conversation with a beautiful group of women who are fighting for their lives, surrendering, and walking in the newness of life. This was our Empowering Women Luncheon — a time for connection, encouragement, and community.

Our focus today was The Mirror and The Window — looking back with grace and looking forward with hope. As we joined the women in reflecting on where we came from, what shaped us, and the new direction God is leading us, the honesty, courage, and vulnerability in the room drew us together in a powerful way.

I always walk away from these luncheons feeling full — and not because of the food. It’s the conversation, the vulnerability, the honesty, the love, and the strength in the room. Some of these ladies are at the weakest point of their lives, yet through God, they are standing in the strongest place they’ve ever known. They have surrendered their way for God’s way — His original plan for their lives — and they have chosen Desire Thy Portion to be part of their journey.

They came to the luncheon voluntarily. We prayed together, broke bread together, talked like sisters, listened like friends, and celebrated like a community. Today was truly a God thing.

As I looked around the room, it reminded me of what Paul said to the Romans: “When we get together, I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours.” And that is exactly what happened today.

Thank you, Danyel Wigley, Toni, and the We Are Living Proof ladies, for allowing us to enter into your world and for entering into ours. As sisters, we truly are better together.

Thank you to our board members Susan Eyring and Jan Janice Sampson Sprock, and to one of our most dedicated volunteers, Patricia Erwin, whose heart for the vision has been a steady, faithful blessing to Desire Thy Portion and to those we have walked alongside.

To the ladies who have been with us from the very beginning of the Empowering Women Luncheon — Cynthia R. Conover-Terry and Maya Royer— thank you for pouring out and taking in with such grace.

We could not experience moments like today without God’s vision, His provision, and the way He stirs the hearts of so many to give, support, and pray for Desire Thy Portion.

Thank you to Hamilton United Methodist Church and the Pantry for supporting and supplying. Thank you to our donors for hearing the call, believing in the vision, and giving of your treasures.

Thank you to Jeanette Bruns, our board member, for always making those from‑scratch desserts. Thank you to Michelle Larson for coordinating so much behind the scenes. And thank you to our other board members, JuanSaye Harris and Rosemarie Wood, for giving of yourselves, your time, and your treasure so we can have luncheons like this.

Today was special. Today was holy. Today was community. And we are grateful for every woman who made it so.

Celebrating Michelle Larson Today
Today we celebrate someone who has been a steady and faithful part of Desire Thy Portion from the very beginning — Michelle Larson.

Even though she is no longer a voting board member, her commitment to Desire Thy Portion and to our mission has not changed. Michelle continues to be a big part of who we are, just as she was on day one.

Michelle leads our volunteers with excellence, keeps us organized, and helps ensure our events run smoothly. She handles so much of the behind‑the‑scenes work that people don’t see, and she is always thinking ahead, always prepared, and always making sure we show up with everything we need to serve well.

Even at today’s Empowering Women Luncheon, Michelle had the details ready — the things most people forget because they’re focused on the bigger picture. That’s who she is. She keeps us grounded, prepared, and moving forward.

I often say Michelle is the glue that keeps Desire Thy Portion running smoothly, and it’s the truth. Her heart, her commitment, and her love for the people we serve make us better.

Happy Birthday, Michelle Larson. We love you and celebrate you today.

🌟 Desire Thy Portion Followers, Help Us Celebrate Ms. Dena Taylor-Weakley Desire Thy Portion family, help us celebrate a wife, mom, grandmother, high school graduate, college student, and now a McDonald’s manager‑in‑training. Ms. Dena has accomplished so much while raising her granddaughters and continuing to show up for her family with love, strength, and commitment.

Reading from her post, she shared that she never imagined she would be where she is today — and she has every right to be proud of herself. She went back to school and earned her high school diploma, and now she is enrolled in college majoring in criminal justice while also training to become a manager — all at the same time.

Her journey reminds us of believing in the plan God has for her, staying positive, and wanting more for herself and her family. She is setting goals not just for today, but for the next generation and the generation after that. Her life is a living example of what it looks like to break cycles, build legacy, and walk in purpose.

We honor you, Ms.Dena Thank you for showing your family — and our community — what resilience looks like. Your determination encourages all of us to keep going and to celebrate every victory along the way.

Today’s Thought
When Serving Requires Shifting
There are seasons in ministry where everything flows, and then there are seasons where things shift — suddenly, unexpectedly, and in ways that stretch you. When you’ve been showing up month after month, year after year, serving individuals and families who are fighting to rebuild their lives, that rhythm becomes part of your life too. You look forward to those moments of connection, consistency, and hope.

So when life forces a change, it doesn’t just disrupt the schedule.
It tugs at your heart.

This week reminded me of something important.
My challenges are real, but when I look at what others are facing, I’m reminded that my discomfort is small compared to their survival. It’s not saying our struggles don’t matter. It’s saying perspective softens the weight.

We see quiet battles every day — not stories to share, but realities we carry in prayer:

Caregivers giving everything they have

Families stretching what can’t be stretched

Parents trying to protect their children from instability

Individuals exhausted from surviving, not living

For us, a shift is uncomfortable.
For many of them, life is a constant balancing act between hope and survival.

And that perspective humbles me every time.

It reminds me why we keep showing up.
Why we adjust when needed.
Why we stay committed even when it stretches us.
Why we continue to love our community with open hands and open hearts.

As we move forward, we want to say thank you —
to our volunteers, donors, supporters, prayer warriors, and those we serve alongside.
Your faithfulness makes it possible for us to keep showing up, even when the path looks different for a moment.

Together, we continue the work.
Together, we keep choosing compassion.
Together, we keep choosing love.

Happy Birthday to Pat Bridges! 🎉

Today we celebrate one of Desire Thy Portion’s greatest blessings — Pat Bridges. Pat isn’t just a volunteer or a donor. She’s part of the heartbeat of this ministry. For years, she has served with quiet strength, unwavering compassion, and a deep love for the people we walk alongside.

If you want to understand how a small nonprofit like Desire Thy Portion keeps going — how it survives storms, setbacks, and seasons of stretching — look no further than Pat. She’s the kind of person who shows up not because it’s convenient, but because it’s in her heart. She serves with excellence, dignity, and joy, always seeing people not by their situation, but by their worth — created in the image of God.

Pat is a gem. A keeper. A woman chosen by God to be part of this mission, and part of our family. Her presence reminds us that this work is sustained by love — not just the love we give, but the love we receive from those who stand beside us.

Thank you, Pat, for being a living example of faith in action. We love you, we honor you, and we thank God for you.

Happy Birthday! 💛
(Pat is pictured on the end in this photo - the one with the radiant smile that says "I am here to serve,")

⚠️ LEGISLATIVE UPDATE | HB 61 ⚠️
HB 61 is scheduled for consideration Monday, Feb. 2 at 1:00 PM in the Senate Public Safety Committee (Room 450, Capitol).

The bill would change how long-term residents of extended-stay hotels are treated under Georgia law by:

• Allowing immediate lockouts
• Requiring removal without a court process
• Treating nonpayment as criminal trespass
• Reversing the Georgia Supreme Court’s 2023 Efficiency Lodge decision, which recognized long-term residents as tenants entitled to judicial eviction

📌 Why this matters:
Many working families, including families with children, use extended-stay hotels as a last housing option. These changes could result in removal without sufficient time or legal process to secure alternative housing.

📊 What we know:
• Thousands of Georgia children currently live in extended-stay hotels
• Families often pay more than traditional apartment rents for these rooms
• Research shows many residents remain in these settings for extended periods, often years

📣 Ways to engage:
• Attend the committee hearing
• Contact legislators to share your perspective
• Encourage thoughtful consideration of due process and housing stability

Georgia ACT supports policies that balance property rights, public safety, and fair process while working to ensure Georgia families have safe, stable housing options.

🎉 Happy Birthday, Susan! 🎉

Today we celebrate not just another year of life, but the incredible gift God gave Desire Thy Portion when He chose you to walk this journey with us. You have been here since the very beginning—steady, faithful, and fully invested in the mission God placed in our hands.

You started as our Treasurer, and today you serve faithfully as the Vice President of Desire Thy Portion. Every step of your journey has reflected excellence, humility, and a heart that sees people the way God sees them.

Your leadership has been a driving force behind everything God used us to build. Desire Thy Portion would not be what it is today without your obedience, your compassion, and your willingness to serve.

Thank you for saying yes. Thank you for standing beside me. Thank you for loving this ministry and every person we serve.

May this year bring you joy, rest, and the fullness of God’s promises over your life.
Happy Birthday, Vice President Susan Eyring!
We love you and honor you today.

Join me in celebrating her.

Starting the New Year with a Heavy Heart and Renewed Purpose 💛

Sunday, I woke up excited and started getting ready for church, only for my husband to tell me the battery light on our van had come on. He suspected the alternator — and he was right. As I sat at my brother and sister’s house waiting for the diagnosis, I couldn’t help but think how familiar this all felt.

At the end of 2024, we had two cars. But the day before Christmas, while delivering gifts to a family we serve through Desire Thy Portion, I had a car accident. Not long after that, our trouble van — the one that had given us issues from the beginning — finally broke down for good. That left us with only one car, the borrowed one from my brother Steve, while we searched for something affordable.

With the help of family, friends God placed in our lives, and my husband’s paycheck, we were eventually able to buy a used van. But while we were still using my brother’s car to give us two cars again, my husband had an accident in it in December 2025. That accident put us right back to sharing one car.

And now, here at the beginning of 2026, the van we just bought needs an alternator, and we have to go through the warranty company to get it repaired. So, my husband is Ubering to work (another unexpected expense) while we wait. It’s all too familiar.

So, as I sit here thinking about what this new year holds for Desire Thy Portion, my heart is heavy — not just for us, but for the people we serve and love. People who, like me and my husband, work hard and still look at a battery light as a potential disaster. My husband works two jobs — one of them as an assistant manager at Pizza Hut — and even with that, something as small as a warning light can feel like a crisis. For many families, it’s not just an inconvenience. It can be the thing that pushes them over the edge.

And this is why I’m sharing all of this — because our lived experience, the weight of constant setbacks, the compassion it gives us for the families we serve, and the reminder that without Jesus and a village, many people fall through the cracks — this is the real picture of life for so many of us. This is why Desire Thy Portion exists.

The only reason we know we’ll make it is because we stand on the promises of Jesus, and because we have a village — family and friends who support us, love us, and refuse to let us fail. They help us thrive. Without knowing God created us for more, and without our village, we would be lost and without hope.

That’s why we are stepping into this New Year with expectation, renewed energy, and a fresh drive to remind our brothers and sisters that they are loved — by Jesus, and by their village, which includes us.

Just today, two of the ladies from The Melody, a Rapid Housing community in Atlanta that we serve every other month, called me. They wanted to check on me, tell me they were thinking about me, and say they missed me. We laughed, we talked, and before we hung up, they said, “Ms. Darlene, we love you. Before we get off, can you pray with us?” I prayed, and before they hung up they said, “We’ll be here waiting on you to come.”

Moments like that remind me exactly why we do what we do.
