Looking back at the most recent mission trip to Brazil, it is clear that God’s plans are so much better than our own. Even in the midst of frustration, delays, and inconvenience, He is working all things together for His glory and our good.

In late May, a mission team from Bowman Baptist Church was preparing to travel to Uganda in June when their trip was suddenly canceled due to concerns about Ebola. Immediately, the team began asking how they could still use their time this summer for the Lord. After much discussion, flight changes, visa updates, and schedule shifts, the team of 7 was ready to serve for a week in Brazil.

Landing in São Paulo, Brazil, on a Sunday morning after a long flight with little sleep, the team hit the ground running, visiting the homes of children who attend Vinde Meninos and preparing for a church service that night. The week that followed was full of ministry, focused on the Fruits of the Spirit. Kids learned about each “fruit” through games and devotions, and every team member had the opportunity to share their testimony or teach a lesson. They served at two locations, investing in and showing genuine love to children whose lives are full of trials and hardship.

From the outside looking in, you would never know that this mission trip was a last-minute change of plans. The team worked together quickly and joyfully to prepare lessons, games, and crafts for kids they had never met, and as a result, children learned about who God is and how He changes lives through the Holy Spirit. Our plan B was God’s plan A all along. Nothing takes Him by surprise, and His ways are always higher than our ways!
