60 Years of Preservation, 60 Years of Discovery
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), a landmark law that transformed how the United States recognizes, evaluates, and protects our shared cultural heritage. Through Section 106 review and related preservation programs, the NHPA has helped identify, document, and protect countless archaeological sites, historic properties, traditional cultural places, and historic landscapes across the nation.
Because of the NHPA, we have a better understanding of the people, places, and events that shaped our communities. Preservation is not about preventing change. It is about ensuring that important pieces of our history are thoughtfully considered before they are lost.
As we celebrate this milestone, we must also recognize that the future of historic preservation depends on continued public engagement and advocacy. Section 106 has safeguarded thousands of significant historic and archaeological resources, but these protections remain strong only with public support.
