“Invaluable: The Unrecognized Profession of Direct Support”
The film, “Invaluable: The Unrecognized Profession of Direct Support,” was produced and directed by Jerry Smith and written by Dr. Amy Hewitt from the University of Minnesota's Institute on Community Integration.
The 45-minute film will be shown in its entirely via Zoom on the following dates:
July 28, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Eastern (Register) and August 4, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Eastern (Register).

30 Years of Community Living: The Administration for Community Living (ACL) has released 30 Years of Community Living for Individuals with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities. Featuring infographics, photos, and accessible language, as well as personal perspectives on community living and inclusion shared by people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (ID/DD) who served as advisors to the project, the free digital book explores the evolution of integration and inclusion of people ID/DD in American society.

Free Resource: University of Minnesota's Institute on Community Integration has released another volume of Frontline Initiative! This is a free, online magazine publication for and about Direct Support Professionals. This edition includes stories from DSP's on how they responded to emergencies like fires, hurricanes and COVID-19, including facilitation of vaccine access for the people they support. You will also find a free COVID-19 virtual townhall support group, a person-centered response matrix and how UMN's DirectCourse online training aligns with crisis preparation and response!

Important NEW OSHA Rules: Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) adopted its COVID-19 Healthcare Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS). Employers providing health care services will be required to comply with new COVID-19 specific standards it specifies. The ETS applies to all settings where any employee provides “healthcare services” or “healthcare support services.” Page 118 specifically refers to residential facilities for those with intellectual and developmentally disabilities are required to follow these ETS. All members are encouraged to carefully review these standards to assure compliance and avoid an OSHA compliance review.

The North Carolina General Assembly is renewing their efforts to help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Oklahoma health services officials are making an effort to eliminate the waiting list for services for people with certain types of developmental disabilities. Right now, that waiting list is 13 years long.
