Shining Light on Mental Health

Mental Health Awareness Month 2025
May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of nurturing our mental well-being and supporting those who struggle. Mental health challenges are real, more common than you think, and nothing to be ashamed of.

Asking for help isn’t a weakness — it’s a powerful step toward healing.

Talking openly about mental health is essential. Every conversation, every story shared, helps dismantle the stigma that too often keeps people silent. When you speak out, you create space for healing — not just for yourself, but for others who may be silently struggling.

“Vilomah” is a Sanskrit word that refers to a parent who has lost a child to death . It translates to "against the natural order", reflecting the grief of a parent whose child dies before them. The related verb is "vilomahed", which means to become a vilomah.

I love this thought

In all of our searching,
the only thing we’ve
found that makes
the emptiness
bearable is each
other.

The schoolgirl Molly Russell died from "an act of self-harm while suffering from depression and the negative effects of online content", an inquest has concluded.
There will be more later from me. Molly was only 14 years old. This is the same age that my niece Elizabeth took her life in 2015.

SU***DE - WHEN SOMEONE IS TOO BRUISED TO BE TOUCHED
2002-07-07

A few days ago, I was asked to visit a family who had, just that day, lost their 19 year-old son to su***de. There isn't much one can offer by way of consolation, even faith consolation, at a moment like this, when everyone is in shock and the pain is so raw. Few things can so devastate us as the su***de of a loved one, especially of one's own child. There is the horrific shock of losing a loved one so suddenly which, just of itself, can bring us to our knees; but, with su***de, there are other soul-wrenching feelings too, confusion, guilt, second-guessing, religious anxiety. Where did we fail this person? What might we still have done? What should we have noticed?

What needs to be said about all of this: First of all, that su***de is a disease and the most misunderstood of all sicknesses. It takes a person out of life against his or her will, the emotional equivalent of cancer, a stroke, or a heart attack. Second, we, those left behind, need not spend undue energy second-guessing as to how we might have failed that person, what we should have noticed, and what we might still have done to prevent the su***de. Su***de is an illness and, as with any sickness, we can love someone and still not be able to save that person from death.

A note from Lynn McDonald. Please read.
My reasons are personal about this...maybe if people's heads weren't buried in the sand of ignorance and they took the time to understand, instead of judging and thinking it won't happen to them because they have the perfect family, life would be a little bit easier for people that do experience this! This hits close to home for me, for family and friends who live under this shadow. The days of 'it' not being talked about or being taboo should be over. In the most difficult moments of life you realize who your true friends are. of my friends will post this, to show their support for those who may be struggling. I am sending love to all those who are suffering grief over a profound loss. I walk with you, I understand, my heart bleeds for your loss. Let us bond together so that we will not face this alone.
