We are so excited to announce Emma Safir: Passionate Wretch, opening Friday, May 1, 7-10pm at BICA. This is the second exhibition in our series The Real Deal.

In Passionate Wretch, Emma Safir’s paintings tarry at the boundaries of privacy and presentation, interiority and reflection, temptation and rejection. Safir photographs textures—fences, blinds, water, leaves, fabric—and then physically works against them. Printed onto gauzy, semi-transparent fabrics, Safir smocks, beads, or upholsters the images over sculptural forms, burying them beneath layers of accumulated handiwork until they function less as pictures than as surfaces: pressured, adorned, and only partially visible. She calls the results paintings. Taking its title from an excerpt by William Blake, Passionate Wretch brings together two new bodies of work by Safir.

A line amongst lines is an architectural intervention by Alberte Tranberg that uses the gesture of a line to sense how infrastructure directs movement, behavior, and perception. A slender steel rod, coated in glossy red, draws a physical and visual division through the landscape, guiding the viewer’s gaze along its branching off-shoots. Referencing powerlines, roads, and public signage, the sculpture frames the built environment as a disciplinary system - one that educates bodies through repetition, regulation, and standardization.

The photographs, glossy and carefully composed, draw from the language of advertising. But within this context, their polished surfaces are subverted. The images act like stage sets or portals, introducing characters that inhabit a speculative world of the artist’s own making. Color runs through them not as decoration, but as agent, atmosphere, and architecture. These are images in which color does something, building a scene, becoming a character.

Our next project space opening is a show Friday, March 13th from 7-10pm!

Mise-en-Abyme emerges from two unholy creations in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein: Dr. Frankenstein’s re-animating a body from stolen parts and Captain Walton’s reconstruction of Dr. Frankenstein’s story. Inspired by these parallel acts, the artists in Mise-en-Abyme each assembled a set of artifacts over the course of three readings of Frankenstein, then received a different artist’s fragments with which to reconstruct reality. The result is a body of work that brings new life to each other’s visions—though what form that life takes will be a mystery.

Frequency describes the rate at which something oscillates: the pitch of a note, the hue of a color. Resonance occurs when a vibration is sustained or amplified by another body, causing materials, spaces, or people to respond. In The Language of Color, these concepts are both method and metaphor. Sound and color don’t just appear: they move, echo, and ripple. Meaning is built through return, through touch, through repetition.
