We're so excited to introduce our September Artist of the Month: Rem! 🧵✨

Rem joined us at our Thursday embroidery circle back in February, and in just six months she's become a true fixture in our studio. Every week she brings in new pieces featuring her signature florals, and fantastic eye for color. Her growth as an artist over these past months has been wonderful to watch.

Rem's path to Buffalo took her through India before she settled here in 2016. Since then, she's built a home, raised her family, and grown strong connections within Buffalo's Burmese community. It was a friend who first encouraged her to try the embroidery circle, and that one suggestion turned into a weekly tradition she now looks forward to. It's a chance to create, connect, and spend time with the community she's built here.

When summer rolls around, you'll find Rem at Front Park with her kids, followed by big BBQ celebrations with friends and family. It's community in every sense, and it's exactly what we love to see grow out of our weekly circles.

Rem's pieces are on display all September at Stitch Buffalo. Come shop the collection, meet the maker behind the stitches, and support her work firsthand. 🌻

There’s a little chill creeping into these Buffalo mornings, and we are here for it. Fall is scarf season, and these indigo dyed pieces are the layering essential your wardrobe has been waiting for.

Wrap it, knot it, drape it over a jacket, or tie it as a bag accent. However you wear it, you’re carrying a piece of skilled craft with you.

Each scarf in the Blue Edition line was hand dyed by artists from our Refugee Women’s Workshop, who trained in indigo dyeing through a paid training program here at Stitch Buffalo. Indigo dyeing is a technique that takes patience and a steady hand to master, and it shows in every fold of color.

When you shop the Blue Edition, you’re supporting artists who are paid for their training and their craft, not just their story. That’s what we mean by economic empowerment.

Shop the collection in store or online, link in bio.

Every day at Stitch Buffalo, local refugee and immigrant women earn income, learn new skills, share their traditions, and build community.

Our Stitch Sustainers make that possible month after month. A small monthly gift creates dependable support we can count on—and helps ensure that this place, and the opportunities it creates, are here for the women and community we serve.

We’d love to have you join us as a Stitch Sustainer. Follow the link in our profile or visit stitchbuffalo.org.

Today we’re thinking of Dolly Parton and the coat that started it all. She sang about a coat her mama sewed from a box of rags, and about learning that scraps, patience, and a little imagination can become something beautiful. That story has never stopped being true.

This coat lives in our studio, made stitch by stitch by ambitious women who know exactly what Dolly knew: that skill and heart can turn very little into a whole lot of color. Rest well, Dolly. Thank you for the songs and the story.

Right now at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, there’s a formal jacket that tells a decade-plus of stories.

It’s called ā€œBuilding Blocks,ā€ and it’s part of FIT: Buffalo Fashion, Identity, and Transformation, on view through November 1. The jacket is made entirely of embroidery samplers, dozens of them, each one representing a Stitch Buffalo artist from across our history. Every stitch on this piece came from a different hand, a different artist, a different point in her own creative journey.

In this video, Devin walks you through how these samplers actually come together, from individual pieces of practice work to something layered into a single, wearable piece of art.

ā€œBuilding Blocksā€ is on display now as part of FIT at the Burchfield Penney. Go see it in person, it’s even better up close. 🧵

Behind every project, a volunteer.

August's Artist of the Month spotlight is on our sewing studio students, and that spotlight doesn't happen without a team behind it.

Every Wednesday and Thursday, our drop-in sewing program runs thanks to sewing studio manager Kay and volunteers Ann, Rebecca, and Katie. They walk new artists through setting up a machine, testing stitches, and working through all 11 projects in our course, offering feedback at every step.

That's exactly where this month's featured artists got their start. Machine by machine, project by project, with a patient teacher beside them the whole way.

Once artists complete the course, many go on to become consignment artists, selling their work right here in our store. That path from first stitch to featured artist is possible because volunteers like Ann, Rebecca, and Katie show up week after week to teach.

Curious what that could look like for you? We're always looking for volunteers across all three of our programs. Sign up on our website and find your place on our team. 🧵
