War Child USA

War Child USA War Child gives children in war-affected communities the chance to reclaim their childhood and helps families to break the cycles of poverty and violence.

War Child has established programs in countries across the world to help rebuild war-affected communities and provide the support necessary for children to experience a stable childhood

When war ends, the consequences endure. A lack of employment opportunities, the absence of effective economic or social structures, a destroyed infrastructure, an under-educated population and a culture of impuni

ty around rights violations combine to create conditions that make a return to conflict all too possible. But, by making a long-term investment in war-affected communities, the support structures for a healthy childhood can be rebuilt and the cycles of poverty and violence can be broken. These countries include:
- Afghanistan
- Democratic Republic of Congo
- Jordan/Syrian Border
- South Sudan
- Sudan
- Uganda

When Donata spent months searching for work without success, she knew she needed a new path.

Through War Child and our local partners, she received hands-on training in bicycle mechanics, developing practical skills that are helping her build a future in a field traditionally dominated by men. Today, she proudly specializes in bicycle repair through the Mastercard Foundation BRIDGE Project in Uganda.

In refugee communities, bicycles are more than transportation -- they help people get to school, access healthcare, reach markets, and earn a living. For many families, a bicycle can mean the difference between opportunity and isolation. In fact, long distances to school remain a major barrier for many learners, particularly girls.

Tools and equipment can still be hard to come by, but Donata perseveres, keeping bicycles on the road and proving that women belong in every profession.

This , we celebrate women like Donata who are turning skills into opportunity - one bicycle at a time. 💛🚴‍♀️

No girl should miss school because of her period.

Today on World Menstrual Hygiene Day, and every day, we recognize the importance of dignity, access, and education for girls affected by conflict and displacement.

Across Uganda and South Sudan, War Child and local partners are helping girls stay in school by providing dignity kits, menstrual hygiene support, and training on how to make reusable sanitary pads using low-cost local materials.

Through our Geared for Success program, we've supported more than 8,000 girls and young people to reduce barriers and create more inclusive school environments. All girls deserve the right to participate with confidence.

“Theater is a mirror of society.” – Annie, age 12, tells us.

Through participatory theatre at her learning center in Bukavu Democratic Republic of Congo, Annie is learning to use storytelling to reflect relationships and peer interactions, and find better methods to get through hard times or conflict.

The workshops teach concentration, reduce stress, and build what students call “superpowers” -- like the “shield of the righteous,” which encourages compassion and standing beside others in difficult moments.

For Annie and her classmates, theater builds confidence, empathy, and community, even on days when hunger and stress make it hard to focus.

In Yemen, only half of health facilities are still functioning. Many schools have been destroyed or abandoned. For girls, the barriers to accessing education are even more complex.

No private toilets. No female teachers. Pressure to marry early or stay home.

A safe school can change everything - restoring dignity, confidence, and a future.

War Child has helped rebuild schools, train teachers, and support thousands of children to keep learning.

Even in crisis, resilience grows when we invest in it.

As humanitarians, we can’t shift focus based on headlines - we stay committed to communities who need our support.

Last year marked one of the sharpest declines in humanitarian funding in Yemen’s history, forcing many organizations to close programs in increasing numbers to leave the country altogether.

War Child recognizes that recovery from conflict is neither easy nor quick. We know that it can take multiple generations, which is why we focus on strengthening people's ability to bounce back in a way that is sustainable over years rather than months.

We’ve seen how education not only provides immediate benefits but also has a profound intergenerational impact – and you can help us to work in places like Yemen, to help children learn, recover, and rebuild.

Be part of that commitment.

Across Yemen, schools have been destroyed, teachers have gone unpaid, and families are struggling to meet basic needs.

But with the right support, change is possible. War Child has been rehabilitating schools, trained over 170 teachers, and offers safe spaces for children to learn. Now many families can hope for a brighter future.

Stand with us to support these conflict-affected communities: www.warchildusa.org/donate

“When winter came, we suffered from severe cold.”
Yasmeen, 9, almost gave up on school.

There weren’t enough classrooms. Winters were cold, and she and her classmates often sat outside no matter the weather. Learning felt impossible.

After War Child and our local partner worked to rehabilitate her school, everything changed. With proper classrooms, learning materials, and safe facilities, Yasmeen found joy in learning again.

“Today, I go to school feeling happy,” she tells us.

This is what long-term support looks like: real change, one child at a time.

A mother’s love knows no bounds.

When Veyra’s marriage ended, she became a young mother searching for a way to rebuild her future. It was her own mother who encouraged her to enroll in War Child’s accelerated education program nearby — helping her take the first step back to school.

Now 24, Veyra balances motherhood, studies, and manual labor on weekends to provide for her children, while her mother cares for them so she can continue her education.

She dreams of becoming a lawyer to defend girls facing the same challenges she once did.
Veyra’s story is a powerful reminder that with support, determination, and the strength of a mother’s love, it is never too late to reclaim your future.
