Policy, advocacy, and the power to create change!

Shoutout to Caitlin Crowell from PPG for joining our Emerging Leaders Tuesday evening to share her knowledge about policy and advocacy!

Our leaders explored what policy is, where it lives, and how communities can influence change. A key takeaway: policy often shows up in unexpected places, from government operations to procurement and contracting.

In less than 2 weeks, Open Buffalo will be hosting its 3rd Annual Eco Justice Block Party!

WHEN: Saturday, September 12
TIME: 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM
WHERE: Jefferson-Utica Plaza, 1307 Jefferson Avenue, Buffalo, NY

The Eco Justice Block Party is a fun opportunity to bring the community together to share space, wisdom, and ideas for creating a more just and sustainable world for everyone.

Last year's Block Party was awesome, and this year's is going to be even better!
Along with free food, ice cream, and fresh-squeezed lemonade, you can also enjoy:

It was an incredible night, and for several of our youth, it was their very first Bills game! What a wonderful way to close out the summer together. Thank you for creating such a special experience for our young people! Go Bills!

On Saturday, our Emerging Leaders Class of 2026 took learning beyond the classroom with our annual Buffalo Neighborhoods and Socioeconomic History Bus Tour!

Throughout the day, the cohort traveled across Buffalo, visiting historic landmarks, neighborhoods, former industrial sites, community spaces, and the future home of Open Buffalo’s Urban Ecology Campus.

The tour gave our Emerging Leaders an opportunity to discover the history behind places they pass every day, explore new parts of the city, and examine how history, policy, development, and systemic inequities continue to shape Buffalo today.

Understanding where we’ve been is an important part of understanding where we’re going and how we can create change.

This week, our Emerging Leaders Class of 2026 dove into the Intro to Organizing workshop!

Through an interactive role-playing activity, participants explored how power works, the different ways people create change, and what it means to organize for stronger communities.

Each session is another step toward building confident, informed leaders ready to make an impact.
