Today's A Mighty Girl Community Pick is in recognition of today's 82nd anniversary of D-Day: "D-Day Girls: The Spies Who Armed the Resistance, Sabotaged the N***s, and Helped Win World War II" by Sarah Rose. In 1942, N**i Germany seemed unstoppable and the Allies were facing the very real possibility of a German victory. So Britain's Special Operations Executive (SOE) took a bold step in order to "set Europe ablaze" and change the course of the war: they recruited women as spies.
These 39 extraordinary women were more likely to be overlooked by the N***s, allowing them to gather intelligence, plan prison breaks, smuggle weapons, commit acts of sabotage, and more. Even still, their life expectancy behind enemy lines would usually be measured in weeks. In this meticulously researched and pulse-pounding book, author Sarah Rose draws on newly declassified files and oral histories to introduce readers to three women of the SOE who risked their lives to help lay the groundwork for the D-Day invasion and pave the way for Allied victory in WWII. Highly recommended for adult readers.
