On June 19, 1865, Union forces arrived in Galveston, Texas, ending the enslavement of Black Americans in the last Confederate state. The move served as a precursor to the December 1865 ratification of the 13th Amendment ratification, which officially ended chattel slavery in America. However, the pervasive legacy of slavery led to the Great Migration, the Civil Rights movement, the Black Lives Matter movement, and more. In 2021, President Joe Biden honored Juneteenth as a federal holiday – the first new holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1986.
