SCRS Flashback: June 11, 2022. 🌾📚

On this date three years ago, audiences gathered at Silo City for an evening of poetry, music, and art featuring poets Richie Hofmann and Albert Abonado, with music by Yuki Numata Resnick and Clarice Jensen and an installation by photographer Pat Cray (with assistance from Max Collins.)

The world was emerging from years of pandemic isolation. Top Gun: Maverick was filling theaters. Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” had unexpectedly returned to the top of the charts. And along the Buffalo River, people gathered once again to experience live art together.

This poemfilm features Hofmann’s “French Novel” from A Hundred Lovers (Knopf, 2022), a collection celebrated for its elegance, intimacy, and attention to memory, desire, and beauty.

One summer night. Four artists. A room full of listeners. And another unforgettable chapter in the history of the Silo City Reading Series. ✨

BABEL is so much more than what happens onstage. 📚✨

The magic happens when students meet authors face-to-face and understand that literature is so much more than a book on the shelf. The magic happens when an entire city is talking about one unforgettable story. Conversations spilling out into classrooms, bookstores, restaurants, museums, and living rooms all across WNY.

For nearly two decades, BABEL has brought some of the world’s most celebrated authors to Buffalo — a celebration of books, ideas, art, music, and community that stretches far beyond a single night onstage. ❤️

Buffalo’s stories come to life. ❤️📚

A recent story from Buffalo Toronto Public Media highlights Torn Space Theater’s Agents of Change program, where students explore Buffalo’s history, neighborhoods, and communities through writing, storytelling, and firsthand experience.

Thank you to BTPM NPR for shining a light on this important work, and to the students, educators, and teaching artists who make it possible every day.

We look forward to bringing our In Gratitude project to Saturday’s event.

We’re proud to be a 2026 general operating grant recipient of the Literary Arts Fund! ❤️📚

Founded by a coalition of major philanthropic organizations, the Literary Arts Fund was created to strengthen literary culture across the United States through a historic commitment of at least $50 million to literary nonprofits over five years. This year, the fund awarded $7.7 million in grants to 40 organizations in 19 states.

Just Buffalo is honored to be part of this inaugural group of recipients.

This support helps sustain the readings, workshops, author conversations, fellowships, and community literary experiences that bring people together through books and writing.

Thank you to the Literary Arts Fund for investing in Just Buffalo’s future. And thank you to the readers, writers, students, educators, artists, donors, and audience members who help make Lit City Buffalo possible. ✨

The work continues. Please join us.

SCRS Flashback: June 2015. 🌾📚

A decade ago, while the world followed the Women’s World Cup, debated the future of Greece’s economy, and streamed songs from Taylor Swift’s 1989, audiences gathered inside Marine A grain elevator for the kickoff of the 2015 Silo City Reading Series.

That evening, Zachary Schomburg read “The Fire Cycle” from Scary, No Scary (Black Ocean, 2009), accompanied by Small Houses.

One of the things that has always made SCRS special is the collision of poetry, music, art, architecture, weather, and time. Ten years later, this moment still feels distinctly Silo City: a remarkable poet, adventurous music, a room full of listeners, and the kind of summer night that could only happen inside a 120-foot grain elevator on the Buffalo waterfront. ✨
