The Assembly House The Assembly House is an architectural dreamworld for the building arts, envisioned by artist/architect Dennis Maher

Assembly House 150 (AH150) is an artist-led 501c(3) nonprofit art, design and construction incubator and experiential learning center in Buffalo, NY. Founded and directed by Dennis Maher—a renowned artist and professor of architecture at University at Buffalo. AH150 creates inspiring, wondrous environments for all to experience the art of building. AH150 brings together tradespeople, artists, designers, architects, artisans, planners, preservationists, students, apprentices and others to build awareness of the built environment, teach skills in design and construction, work together on impactful community projects and empower people through creative action. We use the creative fusion of diverse audiences and stakeholders to shape the design and construction of the built environment. We endeavor to build a more artful and equitable city.

Amanda Newton was a student in the first SACRA class in 2017. Now she is the Shop Foreman at Hadley Exhibits, an exhibit design, fabrication, and installation company in Buffalo, NY, where she builds displays for projects worldwide. She became the first woman to work on the shop floor of the company. She credits the SACRA program at The Assembly House for launching her career, allowing her to develop her talents and find her niche. We are very proud of Amanda and all that she has accomplished!

Assembled Fragments collide, opening spaces between past and present. The layering and framing of materials invites us to discover new views. Rhythms of human movement are echoed by the surrounding environment.

Every box tells a story, holding memory and future possibility. 🪵📐

The Tool Box Relics honor the tools of the past and the hands that used them. Built by students and apprentices honing their craft at The Assembly House, they transform antique tools into sculptural icons—testaments to the vanishing rituals of manual labor. Each box is a shrine to making.

At The Assembly House, the entire environment is a place of "finding." People who work with us are in touch with tools, materials, and skills in order to find purpose in the world of construction arts.

Every city is built and unbuilt many times—with layers of materials, symbols, and unfinished ideas. City of Past and Future Craft exists between these layers, where the legacy of construction becomes a framework for future making. It asks what can emerge when histories of manual labor, repair, education, and imagination converge in a shared public space.

This 3D mural, created with The Assembly House builders and students, uses relics from the former Niagara Machine and Tool Works factory, the site of the mural’s installation. It combines the found pieces with newly crafted elements, all built by those learning a trade. The city's inherited materials, skills, and stories form a map of craft as civic practice.
