We provide food waste pick-up service to Buffalo's local residents, businesses, restaurants, schools. farmerpirates.com/social

The Farmer Pirates Compost Crew was born in 2012. It is run by a small group of Buffalo's urban farmers and gardeners and has a few main goals:

- Keeping food scraps out of the waste stream
- Making all sorts of compost with that food waste
- Creating viable, honest local jobs (mostly just for ourselves at the moment :)
- Creating an ABUNDANCE of this compost to use on our gardens AND sell back to the community at a GREAT price
- Provide residents and businesses in Buffalo a service that lessens their harmful impact on the environment and increases their beneficial impact

Did you know that we accept seashells? They're among the unexpected items that we do/do not accept. Here are a few more:

✅Meat and bones: while many of your “what to compost” lists encourage you to leave out the meat/bones, we have begun accepting this material!

✅Tea bags and coffee filters: these are typically made from natural materials - toss ‘em on in!

❌Grass clippings: many lawns are treated with persistent, harsh chemicals. We aim to keep these out of the compost so they stay out of your garden too.

❌Cork: unfortunately, we do not compost cork. This is because most corks aren’t pure cork, either being made from plastic or bonded together with wax/glue.

❌Pet waste: while animal waste is a natural item, it can be hazardous to humans depending on the source.

It’s Labor Day! FPC works because we do. As a Worker-Owned Cooperative, we aim to celebrate that fact every day - but it’s nice to have an extra occasion to really relish in it.

So, thanks to our team (who is hard at work even today!!) and to all the working folks that make Buffalo the place that it is. We’re proud to be in community with you all 💪🫶

This is our third year composting at Niagara Falls State Park and our first year partnering with Farmer Pirates Compost Crew!

We’re excited to keep building on our sustainability efforts and finding more ways to reduce waste throughout the park.

Scrap It! Curbside is setting sail!

After a long wait, we are pleased to announce that the Scrap It! Curbside program is finally expanding!! We will begin welcoming waitlisters in waves starting in September.

Join BWELL as we learn what happens to our food scraps after we give them to our local composters!

Farmer Pirate Compost Crew is opening their doors and giving us a tour of their facilities on Friday, August 21st at 6pm! Come see how they divert our food scraps from the landfill for both commercial and residential properties!

🚨Please note that parking is very limited for this event and carpooling is encouraged. 🚙
🚨There is no bathroom or running water on site, so please plan accordingly! The tour should not be longer than an hour. 🚽🚫

The Pirates are retiring! Don’t worry, not quite yet…but eventually! For so long, the idea of FPC hosting a 401k for owners and employees has felt “pie in the sky” - it’s just not been financially feasible. Now that it finally is, we’ve found some great partners in Just Futures. Just Futures is a people of color owned company that considers social, racial, economic, and environmental justice values when designing their investment portfolios. This was a priority for our team, to ensure our money is being used in a values-aligned way. We are so proud to now be able to offer this benefit to the crew!
