Can you believe the official start of summer is just a few days away? While we love summer for all sorts of reasons, the warmth does bring some added challenges when it comes to collecting food scraps. We’re talking smells, bugs, and juices (oh my!). The best techniques to prevent these less-pleasant side effects of summer can be summed up as the 3 C’s: cool, clean, and contained. Keep reading to learn more...
❄️COOL: Keep your food scraps as cool as possible by either keeping your collection container in a shady spot or by refrigerating/freezing the food scraps until your pick up day.
✨CLEAN: Don’t let liquids, mold, or bugs linger - be sure to rinse and air dry your tote after every pick up.
🫙CONTAINED: Always keep your collection container lid snapped tight to prevent bugs from getting in. We’ve also found the tidiest collection containers are the ones that use a double-bagging method. You can collect your scraps into smaller paper or certified-compostable bags, then seal and deposit those bags into your larger collection container.
With just a little effort, summertime composting can be more pleasant for us all. ☀️🍉🍦🐝😎
