Faculty Spotlight: We're thrilled to announce that Janz Castelo de Armas has been appointed as Director of the Buffalo State Philharmonia for the 2026-27 academic year. In addition to this new role, Professor Castelo will continue to teach Applied Viola and String Chamber Music in the Music Department. As a violist in the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Buffalo Chamber Players (which he founded and leads), Prof Castelo brings invaluable knowledge and experience to our students.

Congratulations to Brett on his appointment as visiting instructor of double bass at the Eastman School of Music!

You've heard him in many of our concerts, but if you haven't, come to our May 13 concert and hear Brett perform the Buffalo premiere of Missy Mazzoli's Dark With Excessive Bright for solo bass and string quintet.

Congratulations to the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus on the appointment of Dr. Vernon Huff as their new Music Director!

We look forward to continued collaborations with the chorus and Dr. Huff.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Vernon Huff as the next Music Director of the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus, effective July 1, 2026.

Dr. Huff is an accomplished choral conductor, educator, and clinician whose career spans nationally recognized ensemble leadership, ten years of public-school teaching, and an active presence at the forefront of the American choral community. As Director of Choral Activities at SUNY Fredonia, he has built one of the region's most distinguished choral programs, earning three consecutive national honors in the American Prize competition and leading tours to England and Italy.

Selected from a competitive field of more than three dozen applicants following a rigorous six-month search, Dr. Huff will occupy the Cameron Baird Endowed Chair and carry forward the BPC's proud 90-year tradition of exceptional choral performance.

His first appearance on the BPC podium is anticipated this fall, with full season details to be announced in the coming months. We can't wait to begin this next chapter together.
