As many of you know, IEP founder David Noyes has had a long relationship with Makena Children’s Foundation and has watched many of the “Makena Kids” grow up into successful young adults and do great things through education. We are thrilled to report that with your generous support, IEP has committed to help Martha Waithira finish her program at Halisi Teachers Training College in Nairobi, Kenya. Here is more about Martha:
Since she was a little girl, Martha has said she plans one day to be the founder of her own school. This is not just a dream of hers. This is a GOAL. Martha has repeatedly proven the last six years that she sets personal goals and meets them. We have no doubt that she will one day start her own school and positively impact the lives of her many students. She is a perfect example of the positive ripple effect of educating a girl in a developing country.
Following her high school graduation in 2013 Martha moved in with relatives in Nairobi and persevered until she got a job as a Teacher’s Aide in a kindergarten. After a couple years of working, she enrolled in a Kenyan program that allows school aides to attend classes in the evenings in order to become kindergarten and first grade teachers at some public schools. She has been teaching for several years. When asked about her job she says, “The kids are noisy and wiggly, but they can learn!” Martha loves her vocation.
In spite of the fact that she works at low level schools and earns $100.00 a month, she has lived independently and fully supported herself for several years. Now, while continuing to teach, she has enrolled at Halisi Teachers Training College to attend their evening program. This program will qualify Martha to teach a range of ages from kindergarten to 8th grade. She will be able to teach in much better schools and immediately earn at least $250.00 per month. Martha has 8 terms left. She will finish her program in 2020.
Good luck Martha from everyone at Innocent Eyes Project!
