A NEW RADIO FORMAT IS COMING TO BUFFALO
Buffalo/Toronto Public Media has announced the launch of “94.5 The Source” in August.
The new format on WNED-FM will consist of “conversation, local voices, regional stories, sports, music discovery with BTPM The Bridge simulcast at night, and a mix of returning and new programs.”
The Classical programming on WNED-FM will move to WBFO (88.7), however three NPR programs will remain on the non-commercial license as 88.7 will carry NPR’s Morning Edition weekdays from 7–9am, All Things Considered from 4-6pm, and Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me! on Saturdays at 10am.
BTPM converted the station from a non-commercial license to a commercial license a few months ago.
President/CEO and Buffalo Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame Member, Tom Calderone said, “We know people build their daily routines around these programs, so one of the most important things for listeners to know is that Morning Edition and All Things Considered will remain on 88.7. “At the same time, this gives us an opportunity to build something new with The Source — a service focused on conversation, culture, local voices, and discovery that reflects this region and helps position BTPM for the future.”
WNED-FM went on the air in 1960 as the commercial WEBR-FM. After a couple of call-letter changes, the station was sold in 1975 along with its AM sister station, WEBR (970), to the Western New York Educational TV Association.
At that point, the stations became WNED and WNED-FM, joining WNED-TV. WNED (AM) launched an all-news format, while WNED-FM started a more than 50 year run as a classical music station.
The WNED-FM signal at 94,000 watts with its tower in the Boston Hills, has one of the most powerful FM signals and largest geographic footprints, covering much of Western New York and Southern Ontario.
