Binding Broken Hearts

Binding Broken Hearts Binding Broken Hearts is a 501(c)3 WY non-profit ministry created to reach inmates all over the Unit Richards Bible. It was 2009. This comment shook her.

“This is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen,” the inmate murmured, stroking the leather cover of my H.M.S. Judy had been visiting and studying with the female inmates at the Johnson County Jail in Buffalo, Wyoming, for several months. It was the first time she'd realized these ladies had never seen, much less owned, a beautiful Bible. With this comment the Binding Broken Hearts ministry beg

an. Over 13,000 inmates in 36 states from coast to coast have received Bibles, letters, and Bibles studies through the efforts of Binding Broken Hearts, Inc., a supporting ministry of the Sheridan Seventh-day Adventist church. Between November 2012 and May 2017, over 12,000 bonded leather, special edition Andrews Study Bibles have been donated to inmates in more than 544 county jails, state and federal prisons. Currently there are 4,000 inmates who have received a Bible and are continuing to receive monthly letters with Bible studies. We have over 300 on the waiting list for a Bible. It began with a couple of church members visiting inmates in the local county jail. This led to leading out in Sunday and Wednesday worship services. That door closed after a year, and the focus changed to a correspondence ministry. Letters were written, and free Bibles and Bible studies were offered to any inmate who requested them. We started with around 22 inmates in the Wyoming prison system, but a letter to an inmate in Missouri led to an explosion in the ministry! In 2012 we gave away 2 Bibles; in 2013 we gave away 218. Every year since then has seen the number of requests multiply exponentially. In 2013, the director of Andrews University Press became aware of a tiny ministry in Wyoming which was donating their Bibles to inmates. Arrangements were made to provide these Bibles to Binding Broken Hearts at a reduced rate when purchased in bulk. In 2014, at the request of a prison ministry in Washington, Andrews University Press created a special, large print, monochrome version of the Andrews Study Bible available only for prison ministries. They realized that this Bible would be of interest to our ministry, so they contacted the Founder, Judy Mackie, and asked if she would be interested in getting in on this large order. Taking a leap of faith, Judy ordered 750 of these special Bibles. Within six month of receiving the first order, the Bibles were completely distributed, but the requests kept coming. God provided generous donors who came together and enabled us to purchase 5,000 Bibles. These too disappeared within a few months. And then came the famine. Enough money came in to mail letters, but not enough to buy more Bibles. But, trusting in God to provide, we kept telling the inmates they would get one when God provided. Finally, by borrowing everything possible, we were able to purchase another 5,000 Bibles. Some inmates had waited for over a year for their treasured gift. Currently, Andrews Study Bibles have been placed in 544 Federal and state prisons and county jails. Each inmate who requests a Bible is placed on the mailing list and receives a personalized letter with one or two Bible studies every month. Since 2012, we have mailed over 140,000 letters. This ministry is entirely powered by volunteers from ages 7 to 89. Every family in the Sheridan Seventh-day Adventist church receives a box each month with addressed envelopes along with personalized letters and Bible studies. The envelopes are then stuffed with the corresponding letter and Bible studies, sealed, and returned to Binding Broken Hearts’ headquarters for mailing. Whenever we have the money available we ship out 300 Bibles at a time. Getting a shipment ready takes the loving labor of the entire church which gets together for “Bible boxing parties.” The boxes are built, packed, labeled, sealed, and bagged. When the Postmaster picks up the hundreds of Bibles, it fills the back of the truck. This ministry is totally donation based. Each shipped Bible costs $24.50, and every letter mailed costs $.50. Were it not for God’s faithfulness, the tiny church with 45 active members could not carry on this ministry. Every month it appears that we will not be able to send out letters, and, every month, just in time, we get just enough money to cover the mailing costs. We are currently praying for God to provide the funds for us to mail the 900 Bibles we still have on hand and for Him to enable us to purchase and send more Bibles when these are gone. Binding Broken Hearts’ focus is on encouraging and supporting lonely, broken people through monthly letters, and by providing Bibles when we have them available. Most inmates get no mail, and some even write letters to themselves just to hear their name called for mail. Over 80% of Bible recipients have asked to remain on the mailing list. Every month Binding Broken Hearts receives over 300 pieces of mail from inmates sharing their lives, fears, and joys. Each letter is read by at least one volunteer, and the return letter is tailored to respond to the inmate. Because they know they are being heard, over 400 inmates who have been released are still receiving monthly letters and Bible studies. The only requirements an inmate must meet to receive a Bible is that he or she must be incarcerated at the time the request is made. And, each person must request a Bible for themselves. However, Binding Broken Hearts has received requests from family members of inmates who want to receive the letters and Bible studies. But, why these Bibles? 1) They are study Bibles with Seventh-day Adventist commentary and study guides; and 2) They are beautiful and the inmates treasure them for their beauty and because they recognize their value. Binding Broken Hearts is totally dependent upon God’s providence for donations and volunteers. We invite you to join us in this exciting work of introducing people to Jesus.

Am opening a pile of letters which came in the last two weeks. Here is another great letter that reminds me why we do what we do. It takes so little to make a difference in someone's life.

""Thank you so much for all that you do for all people these Bible study help me and many others. Also the letters mean so much some of us will never get one letter from the outside and your letters are all they have. People come in my cell and see the window to your world that you sent then I let them read one of the letter and it puts a smile on their faces. You are a blessing from God.
Thank you for being you"
God bless you and Bert

Happy spring! We are still wondering when winter will arrive!
We still receive many requests for Bibles and are able to send out an average of 12 a week. Just thought I would share a wonderful letter we just received:
"I want to start by saying 'Thank you' for all the years of letters you sent me. I want you to know that I'd never be able to express to you all the ways your writing me has helped me. I just appreciate you very much, and I want you to know that sometimes we just need someone to be nice to us, so that we can be reminded of humanity.
I'm in a better place now in my psyche! I'm back in college and I hope to have my associates degree in arts before I go up for parole in Oct for Dec. As you can tell college has not helped with my writing skills LOL my hand writing is awful.
I just wanted you to be aware of my appreciation, and to tell you to keep up God's work with everyone that you and Binding Broken Hearts Ince. help. I'm sorry it took me so long to get around to writing this letter!
God bless you all.
Sincerely EW

Happy new year, may 2026 bring you closer to Jesus.
2025 was a rough year and it is good to have it in the rear-view window now. I had a seemingly routine (for me) sprained ankle in September of 2024. Turns out to be the most painful and difficult of ALL the injuries/surgeries I have had, and there have been many. After three surgeries and months of PT I just started walking again in October of this year. Since then, it has been a struggle to get back into a routine. But God is good and He brought me through almost in one piece. I am grateful for my wonderful husband who has been doing valiant duty as nurse in addition to all his work.
I am grateful for everything God has done. He is merciful, gracious and long-suffering beyond anything we can imagine. My prayer for 2026 is to become like Him! Filled with the fruit of His Spirit which is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, kindness, faithfulness and temperance. May His joy fill your heart!

Another poem shared by DA:

"Christmas Eve"

T'was the night before Christmas, and all through the prison, not a creature was stirring, not even a kitten.

I heard a noise from up on the roof, no it wasn't Saint Nick, but there was a trumpet blast, not to be alarmed, it was Christ with wide open arme.

As I looked into His eyes, I said I must be dreaming, or this day has finally arrived. Christ was here to take me home, this prison sentence has no meaning.

I looked into the sky, and it opened before my eyes, and the answers to all my whys, we're answered with just but a cry.

This is the merriest Christmas with Christ and me and all eternity, is all I see. No more crying there for I'm going to see the king of all kings. What will you bring?

So, as long as I'm here I want to share a poem sent to me by Katelynn from Arizona:

By God's Chance

Everyday I look upon
My Holy Father and His Son
For guidance, mercy, and peace of mind
Otherwise, I'm in a bind.

The list is long, my sins are great
There is plenty for Him to hate
Who I am what I've done
Should cause Him to turn and run
As far away as He could be
Looking for one more deserving, not like me.

Now I'm cleansed, forgiven, and healed
Inside, my sinful nature killed
Always accepting me, my Holy Father
Never thinking of me as a bother
He forgives and loves me as I am
Because of the blood of the sacrificial Lamb.

What I have is not my own
It all came down from His throne
Blessings and love and comfort galore
Fell on me from heaven's door.

I so rarely get on here but just wanted to share a thought sent to me by an inmate, Joseph, from Oklahoma:

I am not all I ought to be
I am not all I want to be
I am not all I'm going to be
But thank God by HIs mercy and grace
I'm not what I used to be!!

I like that thought and can only say Amen! Praise the Lord!

It's hard to believe that I haven't posted in almost exactly one year. Time goes by so quickly and life gets busier and busier. Binding Broken Hearts is still going strong. We have been sending out an average of 60 Bibles a month this year and more and more requests coming in every day. In the past 13 years we have sent out 15,710 Bibles and 360,000 letters. It seems hard to believe that God would use a tiny little ministry in a small town in Wyoming in this way! I wanted to share this letter for it is a reminder why this ministry matters:

"Hello sister Judy, I pray this letter finds you and Bert well and happy and blessed in every beautiful day the Lord provides us! That hardly seems necessary to write seeing as how it always appears so true, your love of life bubbling over in your letters every single time (even in the grumbly bits!). As always it was a joy to read your letter to have you take me on a journey outside these walls. This time it felt like a walk with Beatrix Potter as you led us on adventures with Peter Cottontail and Squirrel Nutkin and Conanie the cat! Ha! Ha! It brought a smile to my face. How different life seems in Wyoming, away from it all, on your property. Sucha a contrast from here in Florida where everything has become so crowded and hectic. It seems so peaceful. Thank you again for bringing that peace into my life. I undestand the Lord brings peace, but the peace He brings is in the knowledge that He is always watching and loving us and all will be well when He returns. The peace your letters bring is that ther's a little place in the world whre things still work as God intended. A little piece of His machine that isn't tarnished by human activities. A tiny little speck of this earth where a deer family can enjoy the morning and robins can feast on last season's chokecherry raisins! Thank you again for that, Sister Judy. I'll leave off this letter without a single complaint, a single grumbling, or any hint of negativity. Thank you always for your prayers. I return them to you with as much sincerity. From your friend and brother in Christ. Arthur Ross"

Life goes by so quickly that I haven't had time to post anything for a while. However, this letter is so fun I had to share it. The grammar and spelling are his:

"My name is AD here are the V Unit. I am a friend of Elijah who have being a brother to me. About a year ago received your letter after reading it offer it to me to read as I readed it it was about the word of God, that we had talked about that day.

"After that everytime he received your letter I would read it to see what we had talk about or prayer about be in the letter and most time you would be on key! I asked him was you a prophet? Because the things we would talk or pray about would come to pass in the letter and we watch it happen.

"The more I readed your letter I could see the picture of the things you was talking about in my mind as those I was there looking through my own eyes. I told Elijah I love the way you write to tell your story. I told him you should write a book because the way you tell the story in the letter I would read it if I could get it.

"Eliah received your letter dated April 25, 2023 after read it he call for me and told me to read this letter. It was my prophet of you writing a book, with your sister! God be the glory! I would love to received your letters and your books. Thank you. AD"

2022 has come and gone, 2023 beckons. We have no idea what it will bring. My hope and prayer is that this will be the year Jesus returns.

It is hard to keep Facebook updated due to the lack of helpers, but this seems like a good time to give a quick report of the past year.
Due to the pandemic, many prisons released inmates; many others we had been writing to died. Satan is working very hard trying to make it difficult, if not impossible, to get mail and Bibles into prisons we had previously had no problems with.

Consequently, we are now only sending out about 1,500 letters as month which is much fewer than the 4,500 average just a couple of years ago. However, we still have requests for Bible, letters, and lesson studies. By the grace of God we are able to continue to send out the requested items and are still able to correspond with hurting men and women.

2022 Statistics:
We have 6 men and women stuffing envelopes every month;
394 Bibles were sent out, bringing the total number of Bibles provided to 15,024 since 2010;
76 devotional books were requested for a total of 1,588 over the years;
258 Bible study lesson books went out totaling 2,283.
This year we mailed 18,944 letters bringing our total numbers of letters written to 346,033.

Looking at the statistics it seems almost unbelievable, and it is a constant reminder of what God can do. He provided all the financing as well as the help to get these resources into the hands of men and women in prisons all over this country.

Here is a note we just received:
Hello

May He bless yall in all yall do. Merry Chrismas & Happy new Year.
