At YWCA of WNY, an important part of our mission is improving access to resources in our community. For this reason, we appreciate the Alzheimer’s Association for providing our Schoolhouse Commons senior residents with valuable information on dementia awareness, early warning signs, and available supports, helping promote health, independence, and informed care.

Thank you, Alzheimer's Association, for supporting our residents and mission!

Our 21st Century CCLC girls at Maryvale Intermediate took the stage with power and purpose! 5th & 6th grade afterschool actors brought "She Persisted: A Story of HER, a Story of Strength" to life, celebrating trailblazing women who broke barriers and reshaped history. Michelle Sawyers, YWCA of WNY President and CEO, was in attendance and delivered an inspiring message, urging the girls to become future leaders in their communities.

By sharing their stories with the Maryvale 3rd grade class, their performance aimed to empower girls, uplift women’s voices, and imagine a future free from racism, inspired by the mission of the YWCA.

When girls see what’s possible, they become unstoppable.

For our seniors, aging in place doesn't have to mean staying still - in our senior housing community at Schoolhouse Commons, we offer fitness programs to encourage wellness and activity! These programs not only teach and provide exercises for our seniors at their mobility and comfort level, but also strengthen bonds within our housing community.

Maintaining community is just like maintaining muscle - it just takes a little effort!

Four years ago today, thirteen members of our community became victims of a racially motivated shooting, and ten ultimately lost their lives. This tragedy then continued to have after-effects on the city of Buffalo, causing fear, leaving already-vulnerable areas without reliable access to food, and altering the lives of the families and communities of the victims forever.

Today, and every day, we remember those lost and hurt by the 5/14 mass shooting, as we remain committed to our mission of eliminating racism and advocating for justice. Together, we hope to rebuild a stronger Buffalo as we remember those we have lost.

We would like to thank The Prevention Council of Erie County () for spending the past six weeks with our residents teaching about the WISE (Wellness Initiative for Senior Education) program, which focuses on wellness, independence, and prevention. We truly enjoyed having them onsite and appreciate the meaningful conversations they shared. These sessions supported key social determinants of health, promoted aging in place, and advanced health equity through accessible and practical information.
