Hello everyone,

It is that time of year again. The Board of the Dan Carlat-Occidental Jam Memorial Scholarship Fund is pleased to announce that it will be offering one $3000 and one $1500 scholarship for this 2024/2025 school year.

The scholarship is available to high school seniors who reside in Sheridan or Johnson County, Wyoming who wants to study or participate in music while in college or at university. The student need not major in music but must have some music-related activities while in college or university. For example, a student can major in biology while participating in a choir, band, or orchestra.

To qualify, the student must have a 3.0 GPA or better, have been admitted to a college, university, or other secondary education program, currently study music or music education either in school or through private study, and wishes to study or participate in music in college or university as described above.

To apply, please provide the Board with the following:

1. A letter to the Board explaining why the student should receive the scholarship, including a description of any long-range plans for studying or participating in music or music education;

2. A copy of his or her high school transcripts showing a 3.0 GPA or better;

3. One letter of recommendation from a person of the student's choosing who has knowledge of the student's interest or participation in music or music education; and

4. A letter of acceptance from an educational program, college, or university.

The deadline for applications is Friday, April 11, 2025.

The four finalists will be called for an interview with the Board where they will perform music as part of the interview process. The winners of the scholarship will also perform at an early show before one of the weekly jam sessions at the Occidental Hotel this summer.

It’s that time again. We will be awarding three $3000 scholarships to Sheridan and Johnson County Wyoming graduating high school seniors. To qualify, the senior must: 1) reside in Sheridan or Johnson County; 2) have a grade point average of 3.0 or better; 3) have been admitted to a college, university, or educational program; 4) study music or music education either through school or private study (all instruments welcome); and 5) want to study music, music education, or something else, but will still participate in music programs like chorus or band.

To apply, the student must provide the Board with a letter explaining why the student should receive the scholarship, including a description of long-range plans for studying or participating in music or music education. In addition, they should include high school transcripts showing a 3.0 or better GPA, one letter of recommendation from a person of the student’s choosing who has knowledge of the student’s participation in music, and a letter of acceptance from a college, university, or educational program.

To qualify for the scholarship, the student must want to participate in music programs in college and have a 3.0 or better grade point average. The student need not major or minor in music, but he or she should be engaged in a music program in school, like band or orchestra. If your student would like to apply, please have them send a resume, a letter to the Board explaining why they should receive the scholarship, a letter of recommendation from a person of their choosing, a copy of their transcripts, and a copy of the letter accepting them into a college or university. The group photo is with Lynn Young, one of our board members, and David Stewart, the man who first conceived of the idea to start this scholarship fund. This year marked seventeen scholarships since 2009. Time flies.

The Board is thrilled to announce that it has awarded three scholarships this year to Morgan Blaney of Buffalo High School ($3000), Katie Scholebo of Sheridan High School ($3000), and Matt Gardner of Buffalo High School ($1500). We could not be prouder of these excellent students, musicians, and human beings. We will keep you posted on when they will be performing at the Occidental this summer.

Hey all,

The Board is now accepting applications for the two $3000 scholarships to be awarded in 2019. Qualified applicants include: 1) all high school seniors from Johnson and Sheridan Counties Wyoming who will be graduating in 2019; 2) who have a grade-point average of 3.0 or better; 3) who have been admitted into a college or university; 4) who are currently studying music or music education either in school or through private study; and 5) who wishes to study, major, or participate in music or music education programs while in college. The student qualifies if he or she majors in philosophy so long as he or she will participate in a music program offered by the college, like marching band or chorus.

To apply, please send the Board the following: 1) a letter to the Board written by the student that explains why he or she should receive the scholarship and providing information about what the student plans to do in music in the future; 2) a copy of the student's high school transcript showing a 3.0 or better grade-point average; 3) a letter of recommendation from a person of the student's choosing who has knowledge of the studen's interest or participation in music or music education; and 4) a letter of acceptance from a college or university.

After the Board reviews the applications, it will select four finalists to interview with the Board and to play or perform music as part of the interview process.

I was taking some friends on a tour of Willow Grove Cemetery when I found Dan and Linda Carlat’s graves. I said,”one more time,” in Dan’s honor. We sure do miss his grace and music. This scholarship is a great reminder of him.
