Lead exposure is one of those issues that can quietly shape a child’s path. There is no known safe level of lead in a child’s body, and even small amounts can affect learning, attention, and behavior. Because early childhood is when the brain is building fastest, the environment around a child matters, and that includes the water at their school or child care.
That’s why our director, Kim Stewart, stood with community leaders at last week’s press conference. Developmental screening helps us catch concerns early. Prevention helps us keep some of those concerns from starting at all.
Here’s how you can be part of it:
- If you run or work in a school or child care program in Erie County, the Erie County Water Authority is offering free testing materials. Reach out to them directly to get your program started.
- If you’re a parent or caregiver, it’s fair to ask your child’s program whether their water has been tested. It’s also worth asking your pediatrician about blood lead testing.
- If you’re outside Erie County, your local health department can tell you what’s available near you.
