Emerging Leaders in the Arts Buffalo

Emerging Leaders in the Arts Buffalo ELAB is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that exists to help emerging artists in WNY grow, learn, and expand opportunities, locally and nationally.

Founded in 2010 by a loose collective of working artists, we are a catalyst in the region. Offering emerging artists in all disciplines opportunities to grow and collaborate, we are best known for our one-night site-specific art event, CITY of NIGHT. We work to unify diverse individual artists with movements such as historic preservation and sustainability. Over five years, our simple yet innovati

ve programming and events have filled a void for the artists in our region, who in turn are improving the communities and neighborhoods in which they live.

From ELAB Co-Founder Dana Saylor:

For those among us who want to DO something about it; who have an idea for a cool community project and want to make it happen, in Buffalo or elsewhere: Monday I'm launching my FREE "Funding & Influence Bootcamp: Get What You Need for A Mission That Matters". Background here...skip to the end for details.

I'm Dana, and I moved to Buffalo in 2008. I came here specifically because I wanted to live in a place that was affordable, interesting and where I could be a part of something good. (I was seriously considering Pittsburgh, but was already priced out back then because, artist). Once I came to Buffalo, enough other people must have felt the same because a chapter of Americans for the Arts Emerging Leaders program was being formed here. That group became my home, and when I proposed my "crazy art party at the grain elevators" concept to them, they all jumped to support it and work their ASSES off on it with me. The all-volunteer project lasted four years and gave around 35,000 people the chance to see art installations, live music, dance and poetry, food trucks and more in and around the incredible historic site that is Silo City. We won awards, unsolicited grants, and tons of converts to preservation of these unparalleled spaces. I call that a WIN.

Fast forward through the past twelve years and I've done many other community projects, such as co-launch Park(ING) Day Buffalo, Urban Sketchers Buffalo, helped with Buffalo Young Preservationists' projects, become an Advisor to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and a respected artist and architectural historian.

I had my first child, Artemis, in January of 2019, and the reflection period since that time gave me an opportunity to see that I was actually well-positioned to become a mentor and teacher to those who want to do projects like those I've done (and beyond). So I decided to hire my first business coach in March during the most anxious time of the pandemic (for me), and it led me to actually formulate a curriculum, a structure and an approach to teaching other DIY community changemakers who say "Someone ought to DO something about that. I guess that someone is ME!"

SO, the "Funding & Influence Bootcamp" series starting Monday in my FB group will help you get your idea off the ground - or relaunch an idea you might have worked on for years or shelved because it lost momentum or you couldn't figure out how to attract the right attention and money. If you have a mission that matters, it's worth tuning in.

If you feel like you missed your chance to fall into Narnia, visit Hogwarts, or quest after the dark crystal, you should visit The Keyhole on September 7/8th. It has been created by a magical group of artists and poets, many of whom brought you City of Night, Cirque de la Lune, and Teslafest.

The large interactive installation will be open to all at Music Is Art, and if you want to beat the crowds, support our kickstarter (link below) and get a ticket to our VIP preview night next Friday.

Art that you can experience, enter-into and engage-with is at the threshold: The Keyhole Project is a journey into and beyond yourself.
