Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Sue Gardner, a member of the Community Foundation family who recently passed away.

Sue served on the Community Foundation Board from 1999 to 2003, where she contributed her many talents to helping advance the Community Foundation’s mission of connecting people, ideas and resources to improve lives in Western New York.

As an attorney, Sue also partnered with the Community Foundation to ensure that her clients’ charitable wishes were achieved. For her ongoing partnership, Sue was awarded the Community Foundation’s Gordon Gross Award in 2018, established to recognize professional advisors who have been tireless advocates and friends to both the Community Foundation and Western New York.

Sue was always looking to make a difference, and also became a lifetime member of the 21st Century Fund, a giving circle of the Community Foundation.

We are honored that Sue shared so much with us, and know that her memory will live on in the people, places and causes that she cared for so deeply.

In 1934, Edward and Mary Seaton Kleinhans, the owners of a clothing store that bore their name, left part of their estate to the Community Foundation with instructions to fulfill their dream of building a music hall for our community.

The Community Foundation Board led the efforts to find a location, choose an architect, oversee the construction and secure a federal grant when more funds were needed to see through the couple's wish.

Kleinhans Music Hall opened its doors in 1940 and now more than 90 years later, our community still benefits from the Kleinhans' generosity!

Today , we pause to remember the 10 lives lost, those who were injured and all who continue to carry the impact of a horrific act of violence on May 14, 2022.

We hold this day with care and intention, honoring the grief many still feel while recognizing the strength, love and resilience that continues to move through our community.

In remembrance, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a more equitable and vibrant Greater Buffalo region where every individual thrives.

Whether behind the camera taking photos and video, creating social media posts, sending email blasts, or making website updates, Darius Stephens keeps busy as the Community Foundation’s Digital Communications Coordinator!

Originally from Syracuse, Darius first moved to Western New York when he attended Buff State. After heading to Miami to attend grad school, he returned to Buffalo in 2025. “I feel like I really started my creativity journey here and wanted to get back to that,” Darius said. “Many of my lifelong friends are here and I love the food, the atmosphere and the community of Western New York.”

Since joining the Community Foundation team last year, Darius has enjoyed coming to work every day and working on his passion of connecting, creating and telling stories through visual content. Some of the highlights so far have been taking photos at events and getting to meet so many people along the way and putting together a video overview of the Reentry Opportunity Center.

He lives by the mantra, “Proper planning prevents poor performance,” and applies this to both work and life.

Outside of work, Darius is always creating. That might mean alone with his thoughts and a laptop at Spot Coffee or at the studio recording music & modeling (yes, he is also a rapper!). He is also very immersed in the film world where he loves to direct and write movies.

Darius can often be found with his ear buds in, likely listening to hip hop, R&B or Lofi, or to his favorite musicians Lil Wayne or Soulja Boy. And if he’s in front of the TV, he’s hoping “Interstellar” or “Bernie Mac” is on.

Darius also likes to travel which many years ago led him to seeing Michael Jackson in Hollywood.

Do you struggle with untying knots or finding things? Darius doesn’t and lists these among his hidden talents.

May 14 marks four years since we lost 10 of our community members in an act of racist violence.

To honor the lives of those lost, and the countless others whose lives changed forever that day, the Community Foundation office will be closed and our team members will be participating in a day of service and remembrance. We invite you to join this city-wide day of service, action and connection.

Service projects include a community art project, a card tournament, gardening activities and more. Learn more and sign up by clicking the link below.
