Elizabeth Licata on GardenRant.com on July's Buffalo Fling of 72 online garden content creators: "...And then there is all the whimsy. Some Fling attendees have made multiple posts totally devoted to human head planters, buffalo statues, gargoyles, gnomes, hubcaps, vintage signage and other objects they spotted in Western New York gardens. I don’t know that we are the garden whimsy capitol of the U.S., but we’d be in the running. Here’s my bottom line: if the plantings are there, the whimsy, in proportion, works, which was certainly the case in all the gardens we toured."

July was a big month here in Buffalo. In addition to the usual Open Garden days and regional weekend tours, we welcomed 72 Garden Fling attendees from 26 states and Canada on July 9-12 for three full days of bus tours (mornings) and neighborhood

Last weekend was Gardens Buffalo Niagara's UrbanFarmDay.com — 20+ urban farms open for touring (for free!).

At the Tribo Family garden in the Town of Tonawanda, there was a talk on home brewing and winemaking by homeowner Matt. He was a fount of information.

First photo is of his hops—climbing 40 ft on guide wires to his roof. He assured us that this was massive overkill, as he really only needs a large handful of hops to make about four cases of beer.

Samples were shared. The beer was VERY good. The wine-making grapes were grown along his garage and fence, in his small but efficient garden.

He imparted much practical wisdom about the processes, mostly that you can spend lots of money on materials and supplies, or be creative and thrifty (as he is) and get pretty much the same quality results.

It's a small residential garden—Matt's got plans to make it even more efficient—and lovely. He grows many native plants to attract pollinators for the Concord and Niagara grapes and other foods—raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries for pies; and peppers and tomatoes for pasta sauce and salsa.

The garden can also be visited on the Capen Garden Walk in Buffalo's University District each July.
