Support MIDWEST ACCESS PROJECT

Did you see Sunday's Chicago Tribune front page?

The article “Dobbs, 2 years later: Out-of-state medical providers flock to Illinois for abortion training as opportunities dwindle” by Angie Leventis Lourgos prominently features Midwest Access Project’s pivotal work to bring high quality clinical training to passionate providers in the region.

The article describes vividly the challenging reality MAP staff have been navigating:

“As the two-year anniversary of the demise of Roe v. Wade approaches, an increasing number of medical providers around the country are crossing state lines — including into Illinois — for comprehensive abortion training as large sections of the nation either ban or severely restrict pregnancy termination.”

MAP has been coordinating essential sexual and reproductive health clinical training for 17 years. MAP contributed to a research study recently published in the journal Contraception that demonstrates that before the fall of Roe, 60% of SRH training need was already unmet. Post-Roe, training opportunities are fewer, and training needs have skyrocketed. As I describe in the Guardian this week, many clinics are struggling to take on trainees due to the rising influx of traveling patients.

Not only that, trainees have to travel farther to get the same training, incurring higher costs of travel, lodging, cross-state licensure, and insurance. MAP helps trainees overcome financial barriers to training with our Learners’ Expense Fund. But costs keep rising. The typical trainee today needs $5000 for non-training costs to complete a 15 day clinical rotation.

As I said in the Chicago Tribune:

“The one good thing about this moment is there is a lot of will now to address the problem… Folks are recognizing that we will not have a next generation of care providers if we don’t act.”

Can you help MAP act to meet the rising need of the next generation of sexual and reproductive health providers?

If you can make a gift, please feel free to use MAP’s secure online webpage or mail to P.O. Box 310, Berwyn, IL 60402. To our supporters- longstanding and new: your support is very appreciated!

Dear Friend and Supporter,

We’ll keep this brief. Without medical providers skilled in abortion, there is no safe abortion anywhere.

Dobbs has changed the training landscape in drastic ways. Medical students and residents in abortion ban states have to leave the state to develop any competency in abortion techniques. Some residents are forced to relinquish even their residency salary while in training. Others have to travel long distances for training because the few places where abortion training is offered are flooded with applications and have limited training slots. However, the many barriers do not deter medical students and residents from understanding the necessity of being able to provide this service to their patients. Many are committed to reproductive justice: to working in underserved communities and to travel to provide abortions in provider deserts.

Doctors already graduate with an average of $200,000 in school loans. Then, our most dedicated and inspired doctors have to take on additional debt to obtain abortion training out of state – the typical cost is between $3000 and $5,000. This alone can be another barrier to being a physician that can provide a full range of reproductive health services.

The Dr. Barnett A. Slepian Memorial Fund works to remove some of the financial barriers to abortion training. We provide direct Clinical Training Grants to cover costs such as training fees, malpractice insurance, airfare and lodging. In doing so, we hope to send a message to these brave dedicated individuals that there is a whole community standing behind them, believing in them and committed to reproductive justice and freedom.

In honor of Dr. Barnett A. Slepian, who lost his life protecting reproductive rights, please help us send this message to our future providers….we stand behind you, we respect you, and we support you!

Sincerely,

The Dr. Barnett A. Slepian Memorial Fund Board of Directors
