Check out this interview with our Prevention Council EC staff member, Jan, and Green Acres Veterinary Center as they chat about the importance of properly storing and disposing of cannabis and other substances to keep pets and animals safe. "The perception is if it's legal, it must be OK, right? And the reality is that's not necessarily the case,” said Robin Mann, executive director, Prevention Council of Erie County.

If animal owners suspect their pet has ingested cannabis, they're urged to immediately contact their vet. Pet owners anywhere can also call the national Animal Poison Control Center's 24/7 Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661.

A warning for pet owners as cannabis becomes more accessible.

Why This Event Matters for Erie County:

* According to the most recent Erie County Community Health Assessment, nearly one in four high school students reported using alcohol in the past 30 days.

* 10% reported using ma*****na before age 13, and early initiation of substance use remains a strong predictor of later misuse.
Programs that focus on delaying the age of first use are proven to reduce the risk of developing substance use disorders later in life.

* Family engagement and open communication are among the strongest protective factors against youth engaging in high-risk behaviors including substance use.

Research consistently shows that when families intentionally spend time together sharing meals, talking, playing, and connecting, children are significantly less likely to engage in risky behaviors including substance use. Family Day highlights these everyday moments that protect youth and strengthen communities.
