What’s on tap this week for the Rotary Club of Buffalo? Our speaker this Thursday is Ray Zylinski, Project Integration Manager for Visually Impaired Advancement (VIA).

For more than a dozen years Ray has been a driving force in helping the visually impaired community achieve the highest level of independence.

Ray is a highly respected advocate and prominent media voice in western New York. He has been raising awareness for the visually impaired on WGRZ’s Western New York Living, WIVB's Daytime Buffalo, podcasts with Horizon Health and is seen in a regional television commercial alongside Buffalo Bills legend Steve Tasker.

The Rotary Club was honored to present a special Buffalo Police Luncheon. Special guests were: Senior Director of Community Relations from Governor Kathy Hochul’s Office Mo Sumbundu, Deputy County Executive Lisa Chimera, Buffalo Police Commissioner Erika Shields, Chief Lloyd, Chief McAlister.

Our honorees were Shree Siwakoti presented with the Unsung Hero Award and Anna Meegan for the Service Above Self award.

During the Blizzard of 2022 Community Police Officer Shree Siwakoti learned about a 99-year-old World War II veteran who had lost heat at his house that was a few blocks from the C District stationhouse. He wasn’t able to walk so the officers carried him to Fillmore Avenue where they were met by another officer who drove the man to the station house to warm up.

Community Police Officer Anna Meegan started the Share the Warmth Event Clothing Drive. This drive aims to collect warm clothing from the community to donate to the City Mission and Haven House before the winter arrives in Buffalo.

It was a perfect evening along the Buffalo Waterfront for the Rotary Club of Buffalo’s networking event with the Buffalo Scholastic Rowing Club.

The club welcomed Rotarians with a beautiful event space overlooking the Buffalo River just in time to see Canisius and Buffalo Sem rowers complete their river exercise.
Board member Eileen Flaherty explained how the association is working with grants to improve the riverfront site and rowing opportunities for those with physical disabilities including building special access ramps for rowers. Our own Brian Casey is Vice President of Rowing for the BSRC!

Wonderful evening and a great opportunity for Rotary members to chat with each other while learning about this great Buffalo resource!

National Grid Regional Director Ken Kujawa gave Buffalo Rotarians an inside look at the utility and the growing needs for electric power in our community.

Kujawa explained how National Grid’s transition from analog to digital Smart Meters was a need to change meters that were at the end of their lifespan along with new technology that puts home usage management in the hands of the homeowner. With new app Sense users will be able to monitor the usage for each appliance on their grid. Much of the discussion following focused on data centers along with the growing need for them and the controversy surrounding their development.
