Beginning this school year, Buffalo Public School students can learn from these community members. Each shared their oral history in a video interview with Dr. Nevergold. The oral history project, “Say Their Names: Honor Their Legacies,” recorded their stories and experiences linked to themes covered by students in social studies classes. Students will learn about the Great Migration, Jim Crow, de facto segregation in the North, and the Civil Rights Movement, for example, from individuals with firsthand knowledge. Their stories are powerful, first-hand examples of African American/American history. In addition to being instructive, they are also inspiring. Students learn that history can be found outside of the textbook. Twenty-four Uncrowned Community Builders participated in this project.
Here are ten who contributed to the 2024 Project. Hon. Rose Sconiers, Deacon Lillian Davis-Wilson, Velma Ferguson, Rev. Eugene Pierce, Mary Ruth Kapsiak, Linda Coppock, Nellie B. King, George Scott, Dr. Lillian S. Williams, Joyce Ford Quick, Dr. Winford Quick, Dr. Ellen Grant.

The 2024 Say Their Names: Honor Their Legacies was formally dedicated yesterday in a truly MARVELOUS event that received an outpouring of love and admiration for the 12 Lifelong Community Builders recognized this year. Thank you to all the sponsors, supporters, and participants who made this event a true example of a loving, supportive community. Special thank you to the members of the Uncrowned Queens Board of Directors -- Dawna Brown, Desiree Breckenridge-Barnes Jean, Linda Coppock, Jennifer Parker, Danielle Roberts and Sandy White. Special love to Jennifer, who, though unable to join us as she is out of town, still found time to assist and advise us in putting together and promoting the event.

Thanks also to our partner, the Buffalo History Museum, Melissa Brown, Executive Director, Tony Greco, Director of Exhibits, Brian Hayden, Director of Communications, Tala Harden, media specialist, Megan Haghin, Director of Development and Lauren Kausner, Educator. This collaboration was indispensable in the success of this project.
