Dallas County Emergency Management is taking a major step forward in public safety with the addition of a new advanced weather monitoring system, a project that began as a simple idea in early 2024.
What started as a pipedream, to bring more accurate, real time weather data to our community, has now become a reality thanks to the generous support and partnership of Marathon Pipeline and Explorer Pipeline.
Dallas County Emergency Management Director April Garrett, who has led the project since its inception, identified a critical gap in weather monitoring capabilities, where radar coverage can be limited at lower levels.
This new system will provide real time, ground level weather data, including wind speeds, rainfall, and lightning detection, allowing emergency officials to make faster and more informed decisions during severe weather events.
In addition to improving response efforts, the system will play a key role in protecting the public during large community events, school activities, and outdoor gatherings by providing enhanced situational awareness.
The weather station will be installed on the City of Buffalo water tower west of Woods Grocery Store. Dallas County Emergency Management extends its appreciation to the City of Buffalo for their partnership and for providing this ideal location.
This project would not have been possible without the support of key individuals who helped bring it to life. Eric Kirchberg played an important role in navigating the technical aspects of the system and ensuring the right equipment and capabilities were selected. Deputy Director Tara Swanigan also worked closely on the project, helping move it forward from concept to reality.
“As a small rural county, projects like this don’t happen without strong partnerships, we are incredibly grateful to Marathon Pipeline and Explorer Pipeline for believing in this vision and helping us bring it to life. This investment will directly impact the safety and preparedness of our entire community.” – April Garrett
This project reflects Emergency Management's continued commitment to improving emergency preparedness and building a more resilient community for the future.
