The MSBC joyfully brought in our Soulful Christmas on December 6th with our Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in The Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor.
We were reminded that The Michigan Street Baptist Church has stood as a beacon of light—guiding travelers, welcoming the weary, and reminding communities that hope endures even in the darkest seasons. This light is a symbol of warmth, unity, and renewal. May it continue to shine as a reminder that when we gather together, we become a beacon for one another—offering comfort, joy, and peace to all who see it.

Be among the first to visit the newly restored Michigan Street Baptist Church, now that its years-long renovation project is complete. The church has been meticulously restored to its original 1849 design, featuring refinished hardwood floors, recreated paint details, and replica pews.

On this day in 1866, Peyton Harris, a founding member of the Church, served as a Vice-President of the State Convention of Colored Men in New York. The convention was held in Albany and devoted itself to black male suffrage.

Happy 168th Birthday to the remarkable Mary B. Talbert!

A fierce advocate for civil rights and women's suffrage, Talbert made Buffalo and The Michigan Street Baptist Church her home. She used her voice to fight racial injustice, both locally in Buffalo and nationwide, and worked tirelessly to preserve Frederick Douglass' home. Her legacy as an activist, educator, and preservationist continues to inspire. Today, we honor her incredible contributions to equality and justice!
