Sloan Comfort Care Home Providing Erie County with a Community Home for the Dying
With Peace. With Comfort. With Dignity. The Sloan Comfort Care Home, located on the beautiful St.

Healthcare professionals from the local community have identified the need for a comfort care home in Erie County. In bringing this comfort care home from a concept to reality, the goal is not to simply provide end-of-life care, but to provide the highest quality of end-of-life care for every patient, in order to maintain the dignity and worth of those individuals. Andrews campus in Buffalo, New Y

ork, serves those who are without either the social or financial means needed to maintain quality of life when placed in end-of-life care. By combining the work of volunteers and the dedicated staff, we are able to care for the underserved members of the local community. This model of caring for the terminally ill has existed in most counties outside of Erie County for close to 30 years, and we are proud to say that this concept has become a reality for the residents of Erie County as of 2019. As we continue to make this house a home, we will be able to accept our first resident on December 15th, 2020. Oftentimes, we are asked, what is comfort care? The goal of comfort care is to alleviate and manage suffering during the end-of-life process so the patients can live the remainder of their lives in a comfortable, home-like environment and on their own terms. Comfort care does not hasten or prolong a person’s natural dying process. Comfort care focuses solely on end-of-life care. In a technical sense, the care would focus on pain control, symptom relief, and the spiritual and emotional needs of the resident, family, and friends. Admission to the home is based on need, with priority given to those who cannot be cared for at home. A comfort care home ensures that proper and necessary care is consistent and supervised for the patients. The patients admitted would be those who fall through the cracks of the healthcare system and end up passing within the walls of the hospital. These individuals include those disenfranchised by the healthcare system, the mentally ill, the homeless, or simply living without the necessary social support to maintain quality of life. The patients may be experiencing financial or social barriers to necessary healthcare, and as such, a comfort care home alleviates both barriers. Social barriers, for example, might include the absence of family or friends or the inability of loved ones to care full time for the individual. The residents are provided with 24-hour care, 7 days a week by direct care staff and trained volunteers, all free of charge. Sloan Comfort Care Home relies solely on financial support from the community in the form of donations, fundraising, and grants. Inspired by the selfless example of Mother Teresa, these comfort care homes provide a familiar and warm atmosphere where the terminally ill may find comfort in the actions of those who serve them. Mother Teresa said, “No one should die alone… Each human should die with the sight of a loving face.”

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

At Sloan Comfort Care Home, we see each day how meaningful it is to be present for one another. Memorial Day is also a time of remembrance — to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, to speak their names, share their stories, and hold their memory close.

The red poppy became a symbol of remembrance after educator and volunteer nursing instructor Moina Michael wrote “We Shall Keep the Faith” in response to Canadian military physician John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields.”

“And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We’ll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields.”

Today, we honor the fallen and their loved ones who carry their memory forward.

May we never forget.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers who nurture, comfort, guide, and love. 💜

There’s a reason why so many people at end-of-life talk about their mother.

In our Home, we often hear stories about moms long after names and dates have faded. People remember the feeling of being cared for. Being safe. Being loved without conditions. They remember shared meals, songs that filled the house, the smell of perfume, and the comfort of being known so deeply by another person.

Today, we honor the love mothers give, and we hold close those who are celebrating with their mothers, remembering them, or missing them deeply.

Thinking of all of you this Mother’s Day. 🕊️

We’re so grateful for our partnership with Canisius University and the incredible students who spend time with our guests and their loved ones at Sloan Comfort Care Home. ❤️

A recent article highlighted the work of Canisius students serving as mercy doulas, where they are able to offer companionship, comfort, and compassion to people at the end of life. Whether they’re sitting bedside, listening to life stories, helping families create memories, or simply being present, these students are learning important lessons in presence, compassion, and service.

We are proud to be part of their journey and thankful for the kindness they bring into our Home.

On Those Days

On those days
when you miss someone the most

as though your memories
are sharp enough
to slice through skin and bone

remember how they loved you

remember how they loved you
and do that
for yourself

in their name
in their honour
love yourself
as they loved you

they would like that

on those days
when you miss someone the most
love yourself harder.

This week, we had the honor of celebrating a very special birthday at Sloan Comfort Care Home 💜

While our guest is no longer able to enjoy food, we believe in living fully until the very end. Our team came together to make the day meaningful and social—decorating her room and creating a warm, joyful atmosphere where she hosted friends and loved ones.

We also gifted her new aromatherapy scents for her diffuser, including her favorite: jasmine 🌸
Moments like these are made possible because of the kindness and support of our incredible community. Thank you for helping us continue to provide comfort, dignity, and connection for our guests every day.
