WNY Education Alliance

WNY Education Alliance WNY Education Alliance was founded in 2021 by Tarja Parssinen in response to the growing need to support students and families during the pandemic.

The WNY Education Alliance is a non-profit organization committed to improving education in the Western New York area through advocacy, community engagement, and strategic partnerships. School closures exacerbated existing inequities in the educational system and highlighted the need for a new breed of independent educational organizations to introduce innovative approaches to improve student outc

omes. Initially focused on safely reopening schools and addressing the learning loss caused by disruptions to in-person education, the organization expanded its priorities to include addressing educational gaps and supporting enrichment programs in the community. To support growth opportunities for local students, WNY Education Alliance partners with teachers, schools, community groups, consultants, child development experts, and other non-profit organizations. Our partners thus far include the We the Parents organization, author and speaker Duncan Kirkwood, the Buffalo United Charter School, PS 54 Dr. George Blackman ECC school, teachers, the Ed-Trust NY, the WNY Literacy Collaborative, and many more. Some of our projects include The 180 Day Project, an initiative highlighting the desperate need to keep children in school for 180 days following three years of disruptions to in-person instruction. This project included successful advocacy of the Test-To-Stay program in Western New York Schools. We also launched The Mind the Gap Project to help address learning loss associated with school closures during the pandemic. Given the chronic absenteeism, mental health issues, and academic challenges, this work has taken on increase importance. We are currently focused on literacy issues in WNY and Buffalo and dedicated advocacy for structured literacy, the Science of Reading, and high quality curriculum and instructional material.

If you missed the big news last week, a "new, district-level test score data released Wednesday by the Educational Opportunity Project at Stanford" found that "students are performing worse than their peers were 10 years ago."

This is important.

This is not just the pandemic but a long-term drop in achievement, with the biggest losses from the lowest-achieving students:

"Education experts say there is no single reason for the declines. But the timing provides some clues.

Students’ test scores had been increasing since 1990 — then abruptly stopped in the mid-2010s. That coincided with two events: an easing of federal school accountability under No Child Left Behind, which was replaced in 2015, and the rise of smartphones, social media and personalized school laptops."

The drops go beyond the pandemic and cut across income, geographic and racial divides, new data shows.

Does your school district use i-Ready? If so, they should rethink that decision.

“Nearly one-third of students from kindergarten to 12th grade nationwide use i-Ready, including in nine of the 10 largest school districts.

But that growth has brought new scrutiny, and now i-Ready is facing a mounting backlash from parents, students and teachers who see it as a waste of time. Critics contend there’s no proof that the interactive lessons raise test scores. Teachers can’t see a student’s answers, just an overall score and sometimes areas for improvement, which some educators say makes it hard to know how to help.”

A growing number of families and educators say they’re fed up with i-Ready’s personalized math and reading lessons, which feature repetitive cartoons and slow voice-overs.

Accountability for adults - interesting. In states that have retention policies, the identification of struggling readers begins very early, as is partnership and transparency with parents, so that everyone together makes sure the child is on track.

Aldeman: Threat of holding students back if they can't read properly is a warning to schools to make sure each child is on track in literacy https://www.the74million.org/article/3rd-grade-retention-isnt-really-about-kids-its-about-adults-who-teach-them/
