ACTIVIST SPOTLIGHT: DOUGLAS BAILEY

What happens when the trash washing up on Lake Erie’s shoreline becomes art?

For local artist and Lake Erie enthusiast Douglas Bailey, it became Lake Erie Leftovers — a mixed-media piece made from trash collected along the shoreline.

Douglas is a self-taught artist whose work is inspired by skateboarding, surfing, street art, and nature. He began experimenting with beach-found materials in 2024 after years of bringing a trash bag along on family trips to their local beach. Seeing new litter wash ashore day after day was frustrating, but Douglas decided to turn that frustration into something that could start a conversation.

The result is a piece made from the very things he finds along Lake Erie - hard, human-made materials that might otherwise remain in our waterways for years, or even decades. One of the wildest finds? A Doritos bag from the 1990s that was floating just 20 yards offshore.

Lake Erie Leftovers is currently being featured in the Flotsam & Jetsam Gallery at the Lake Erie Maritime Museum, after previously being displayed at Gannon University’s Center for Lake Erie Education and Research. It will be on display at the Museum until January 1st. Then it will be traveling around to different Erie County school districts to be on display for science and art classes. Douglas hopes the piece makes people stop, look closer, and think about where our trash ends up - and what we can do about it.

His message is simple: dispose of your trash properly, reduce and reuse when possible, and get involved. Even picking up litter in your own neighborhood can help keep it from reaching our waterways.

When asked what being an environmental activist means to him, Douglas said:

“Protecting what can’t protect itself, raising awareness about the issues that need our attention, and inspiring others to care for and protect what we have.”

And his hope for the future of the Great Lakes?

Loved. Clean. Protected.

Great news out of the US Senate, they passes the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Act of 2025. Which appropriates $475 million annual to fund Great Lakes restoration projects.
Surfrider is proud to be a member of the Healing Our Waters Great Lakes Coalition and the effort to get this bill across the finish line for our Great Lakes water and communities.

Come join us at one of our last cleanups of the year! Saturday, 9/26 from 10:30am-12:30pm we will cleanup 18 mile creek. Bring your kayak, canoe, or SUP. Don’t have a watercraft? Send us a message and we’ll do our best to accommodate. We’ll spend the morning out on the water, then docking our boats to clean up along the shoreline. Coffee, donuts, good company, and a little time outside. What’s better?
