Congratulations ARTA member and Education Committee co-chair Peter Horn and the entire cast and crew of SHELTERED at Jewish Repertory Theatre, playing through March 1st. This moving play reminds us of those who rise up in hardship; it paints a very human and, at times, painful portrait of heroism and selflessness.

🖐️ What is Soundpainting?
Soundpainting is a live composing sign language used across multiple disciplines. With 1,500+ gestures, the Soundpainter guides performers in real time to create spontaneous, collaborative compositions.

📍 Created by Walter Thompson in Woodstock, NY (1974), Soundpainting is now practiced worldwide—and we’re bringing it right here to Buffalo.

Soundpainting is the universal multidisciplinary live composing sign language for musicians, actors, dancers, and visual artists. Presently (2025) the language comprises more than 1500 gestures that are signed by the Soundpainter (composer) to indicate the type of material desired of the performers. The creation of the composition is realized, by the Soundpainter, through the parameters of each set of signed gestures. The Soundpainting language was created by Walter Thompson in Woodstock, New York in 1974.
