The Rochester Kwanzaa Coalition mourns the transition of our founder, Dr. David โ€œSankofaโ€ Anderson

A beloved Elder, Cultural Leader and Master Teacher whose life and work helped shape generations of African-conscious thought, cultural practice and community leadership in Rochester.

Dr. Anderson was far more than the founder of an organization.

Through the Rochester Kwanzaa Coalition, the Black Storytelling League, Akwaba and decades of teaching and cultural work, he dedicated his life to reconnecting African people with our history, our traditions, our dignity and one another.

To generations who had the privilege of sitting at his feet, Sankofa was a teacher in the deepest meaning of the word. His extraordinary knowledge of African and African-American history was matched by humility, warmth, eloquence and an unwavering commitment to our people.

He taught us that culture must be lived, history must be remembered and what we inherit from our ancestors carries with it a responsibility to those who come after us.

The Rochester Kwanzaa Coalition exists today because of the foundation he laid.

As we mourn our founder, we also accept the responsibility of preserving his work, telling his story and carrying forward the institution and traditions he entrusted to our community.

There are some people whose influence cannot be measured simply by the years they lived, because pieces of them continue living in everyone they taught.

Dr. David โ€œSankofaโ€ Anderson was such a man.

We extend our deepest love and condolences to his family, his students, his loved ones and the countless members of our community whose lives were touched by him.

Our Master Teacher has joined the ancestors.

May we prove ourselves worthy of what he left us.

WHAT IS FREEDOM WITHOUT SELF-DETERMINATION?

On June 19, 1865, freedom was declared for the enslaved in Texas, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. But freedom on paper and freedom in practice are two different things.

That's where KUJICHAGULIA comes in. Self-Determination is the bridge between being freed and being free.

It's the choice to define ourselves, instead of being defined.
It's the choice to speak for ourselves, instead of being spoken for.
It's the choice to build our own tables, instead of waiting for a seat at someone else's.

This is what our ancestors understood the moment the news reached Galveston. Freedom wasn't the finish line. It was the starting point.

This July, as we honor Kujichagulia, we honor that same spirit: the ongoing work of claiming our full humanity, on our own terms.

Honoring the Past. Serving the Present. Inspiring the Future.

What does it mean to you?

Drop your thoughts, opinions, and insights in the comments. We want to hear how you define yourself, speak for yourself, and build for yourself.

Frederick Douglass was a part of our 50 Faces of Freedom and because yesterday was the 4th of July, we thought we'd bring his words back to the forefront!

KUJICHAGULIA. Self-Determination. ๐Ÿ”†

In 1857, Frederick Douglass reminded us of a truth that still holds today: power concedes nothing without a demand.

Self-Determination has never been passive. It's the work of demanding what is ours, defining our own future, and refusing to wait for permission.

If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Douglass knew it in 1857. We live it every day.

Honoring the Past. Serving the Present. Inspiring the Future.

๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ HONORING OUR ANCESTOR: GAIL V. WELLS ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

"Our strength is standing on the shoulders of our ancestors.
You cannot forget who paved the way."

Sister Gail didn't just speak these words.
She LIVED them.

As a Founding Committee Member of Buffalo's Juneteenth in 1976, she helped CREATE the pathway we walk today.

For 50 years, we've stood on HER shoulders. Now, as we celebrate this 50th Anniversary, we honor HER legacy.

Rest in power, Sister Gail.
Your vision built this celebration.
Your spirit lives in every Juneteenth - this 50th Anniversary is no different.

We will never forget who paved the way. ๐Ÿ’š
