Something new is coming to Martha’s.

A 6-month-old lamb — spared from slaughter — is joining our small sheep herd. We don’t have the full story yet, but we have this: a second chance, a safe place to land, and a new addition to the MFAS herd.

Young animals don’t come through here often. We’re looking forward to all of it — the chaos, the curiosity, the first best friend moment.

Follow along — this one’s just getting started.

(Yes, that’s a goat. The lamb hasn’t arrived yet. Leighton just heard the news and wants to be first in line meet the lamb).

Some bonds you plan. Some you just notice one day. Anthony and Junior — definitely the second kind.

Sharon and Broader came in terrified of hands.
Broader made the first move. Sharon decided if he was doing it, she was too.
Anthony and Julia have been showing up. This is what that looks like.

Some people arrive here looking for something they can’t quite name. Then they spend ten minutes with Kevin and start to figure it out. Every animal here is cared for like they matter — because they do.

Welcome to Martha’s Farm Animal Sanctuary 🧡

This place exists because of a simple belief: farm animals are sentient beings who deserve more than survival. They deserve safety, dignity, and the chance to truly flourish.

Nikki and John started this sanctuary in the hills of the Santa Ynez Valley for the animals — the cows, goats, pigs, donkeys, sheep, chickens, and ducks who arrived neglected, unwanted, or no longer considered “useful.” Here, they become family.

It’s named after Nikki’s mother, Martha. An animal lover whose quiet compassion still shapes everything we do.

What nobody quite expects is what happens next.
When animals are given safety and time, something shifts. They form friendships. Their personalities shine through. They learn to trust again. And the people who show up to care for them — the volunteers, the visitors, the ones who just needed somewhere to be for an hour or two — they leave a little softer than they arrived. It’s a transformative experience.

Nobody engineers that. It just happens.

There are so many ways to be part of it:
🐄 Visit for a sanctuary tour
🧡 Volunteer if you’re local
🐐 Symbolically adopt one of our animals
📩 Get our newsletter — stories from the sanctuary, straight to you
📱 Follow along, share, engage — it matters more than you know

We’re really glad you’re here. If you’ve read this far, you’re one of the herd — drop your favorite animal emoji so we can say hi 🐷📍

manifest Delilah shaking her head

She doesn’t know she’s the reset button. She just lives here and happens to be perfect.

This is Delilah. She’s a donkey at Martha’s Farm Animal Sanctuary and she takes her job very seriously.

(Her job is just being Delilah.)

🫏 Follow along for your daily dose of her and her friends.

She’s little. She’s white. And somewhere out there, she’s framed on a little boy’s bedroom wall.

This is Micaela.

She doesn’t know she’s anyone’s favorite. She just knows that when he shows up, she shows up too. Every single time.

That’s the thing about our animals that people don’t expect — they remember. They choose. He keeps coming back for her, and honestly? She’s shows up for him.

There’s something that happens between kids and these animals that we can’t fully explain. They gravitate to each other and create unfiltered connection.

We see it every single time.

If you’re in need of a little connection, send us a DM. Let’s find out how you can be a part of Martha’s 🧡

This might sound like a fake fact… but did you know goats actually have accents? 🐐
Researchers found goats develop different bleats depending on the herd they grow up with — basically picking up a local dialect from their goat friends. Same species, different ‘goat accents.’
So yes… somewhere out there is a goat with a very specific regional opinion. Swipe to the end to hear for yourself 🐐

Meet Angela 🧡

She’s only been volunteering at the sanctuary for a few weeks, but it’s already become her favorite part of the week.

Angela first got involved because her older son became interested in the humane treatment and raising of animals.

One of our favorite things about this place is how often it becomes a family affair. What starts as curiosity usually turns into connection… for both humans and animals.

Safe to say we like to keep things in the family around here.

Whether you’re one of our newest herd members or you’ve been around for a while now, what’s one thing you’d love to see more of from Martha’s each week? Let us know in the comments — no wrong answers from family 🧡
