🚨 Scam Alert for Habitat Homeowners 🚨
Some Habitat for Humanity homeowners are again receiving fake checks claiming to be “part of your Habitat contract.” These are not real Habitat or HabTex checks.
Here’s what you need to know 👇
🏡 Real Habitat or HabTex Checks:
✅ May come from your local Habitat affiliate or HabTex Mortgage Services
✅ Are for specific reasons you already know about, like escrow refunds or insurance claims
✅ You can always call to confirm: 512-616-5747
🚫 Scam Checks:
❌ Come with fake stories (“part of your contract,” “a rebate,” “you must send money back”)
❌ Usually have large, unexpected amounts ($5,000-$10,000)
❌ May pressure you to act fast or send money
❌ Often use a name that looks like Habitat, but isn’t
🔎 When in doubt:
1️⃣ Stop: Don’t cash or deposit the check
2️⃣ Verify: Call your Habitat affiliate or HabTex Mortgage (use the number you already know or find it on our website, not on the check)
3️⃣ Report: Notify your bank and the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov
