Heavenly Father, we give thanks for the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, and father figures who reflect Your love through guidance, sacrifice, and care. Bless them with strength, wisdom, patience, and peace. Today we celebrate and give thanks for all who nurture, guide, and love like a father.

Sunday, June 21 – Fourth Sunday after Pentecost
Matthew 10:24-39
This section of Matthew’s Gospel before us this week is often labeled “The Cost of Discipleship.” And indeed, Jesus doesn’t mince words in warning those who would be his followers the level of commitment required. I’ve sometimes asked in sermons on this subject, “Is this a help wanted ad you would answer?” Without mitigating the clear and undeniably stark words of our Lord, I think we’d still be better to call this “The Benefit of Discipleship”. For while Jesus knows the challenges those who would become his disciples faced – and face today, especially in the parts of our world very antagonistic to Christianity – he also makes sure these first disciples and we, his disciples today, know that we are known, valued, and ultimately will be blessed by God if we walk in the ways of his Son. And that seems to me to be very much worth the cost!

Gracious God,
We give thanks for freedom, justice, and the dignity You give to every person created in Your image.
On this Juneteenth, we remember the long struggle for liberation and pray for healing where there is still hurt, division, and injustice.
Move us by Your Spirit to seek peace, love our neighbors, and work for a world where all may live in freedom and hope.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
