The Battle of Crooked Billet was one of the bloodiest days in Bucks County history—but was it avoidable?

George Washington may have put an underprepared militia in an impossible position—ordering a small, undermanned force to disrupt trade with British-occupied Philadelphia, provoking a powerful response and leaving them exposed. The result? A devastating loss, with dozens of Americans killed, captured, or worse.

Was it a necessary risk… or a tragic miscalculation?

Bucks250PA joins the African American Museum of Bucks County (AAMBC) and our historical community in mourning the passing of Linda Salley.

As President of AAMBC and a valued member of the Bucks250PA Commission, Linda was a dedicated advocate for African American history, education, and storytelling in Bucks County.

Her leadership guided AAMBC from a traveling pop-up museum to the development of its permanent home at Boone Farm in Core Creek Park, ensuring that untold stories and forgotten figures will continue to be shared for generations to come.

Linda’s influence on Bucks County’s historical community will be long lasting, and her loss is deeply felt. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Linda’s family, friends, colleagues, and all who knew her.

The Salley family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations in Linda’s memory be made to:

It started with pots and kettles.
Then came cannonballs.
Under George Taylor, Durham Furnace in northern Bucks County became a vital supplier to the Continental Army—proving that even here, industry shaped the fight for independence.

In the summer of 1776, John Erwin was not a legend — he was a 20‑year‑old from Tinicum Township, Upper Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He enlisted in George Washington’s Flying Camp, a dangerous, fast‑moving force meant to delay the British and absorb losses.
Captured at Fort Washington, John spent four years aboard British prison ships — hundreds packed below deck, little food, no bedding, disease everywhere.
When he was finally exchanged in 1781, he didn’t come home a victor.
He returned emaciated, sick, and broken.
One year later, he was dead.
John Erwin’s story reminds us that independence wasn’t won only by speeches and generals — but by young men who disappeared into suffering and came home changed… if they came home at all.
