Project Legacy's Black History Moment highlights Allen and Christine Gooden.

Allen and Christine Gooden spent 40+ years educating children and youth in Buckingham County.

She enrolled in Virginia State College for Negroes at 16 years old. Once she graduated with honors with a degree in HOme Economics she was a teacher in Princess Anne County, Maryland. In 1945, she returned to her home as the bride of Allen C. Gooden and established the Home Economics program at the Buckingham Training School. Where her love and commitment to her student inspired her to teach for more than 44 years.

He was educated in Birmingham Alabama and enrolled in Alabama State Teachers' College. He served honorably as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. While stationed in Virginia he met Ms. Christine Shelton, the love of his life. They were married in 1944. On a 2-day trip to Buckingham to visit his new in-laws, he decided to lay down roots and raise his family there. While there Mr. Gooden became an influential Buckingham educator for more than 40 years, where he served in multiple positions including the principal of a newly desegregated school in Buckingham County.

They both served on multiple community service boards and were dedicated to their community and their family. They had 7 children and a host of grandchildren.
