🌱 : Toss a Seed, Help Restore the Desert!
Can tossing a handful of seeds really make a difference in the Sonoran Desert? Yes—when they’re the right seeds, in the right place, at the right time.
Native desert plants do much more than make our landscape beautiful. Their roots help stabilize soil and reduce erosion, while the plants provide food, shelter, and habitat for insects, birds, reptiles, and mammals. Native vegetation is an important part of a healthy desert ecosystem.
That’s where WTMC’s Desert Defenders come in!
Through hands-on conservation projects, our volunteers help restore and protect areas around the White Tank Mountains—including projects that use native seeds to give nature a helping hand.
But restoration isn’t as simple as tossing any packet of wildflower seeds onto the ground. Seeds need to be native to and appropriate for the local ecosystem, and factors such as rainfall, temperature, soil conditions, and timing influence whether they germinate and survive.
