American Legion Auxiliary Unit 53 wrapped up the 2025/26 year and started to plan for the 2026/27 year at their Annual planning meeting on June 8th. At the meeting, Unit 53 inducted 3 new members, 2 which are female veterans. They also supported a local new small business by enjoying a meal and dessert from Melodie’s Craving’s who delivered ready to serve for the meeting! Unit 53 is a very small Unit with just over 40 members, so we are VERY PROUD of what we accomplish!
Here are some highlights from this past year with Unit 53:

-1,086 REPORTED service hours!
-Approximately $8,030.00 of DONATED goods/supplies to support our fundraisers and programs!
-First to make goal in District 11 way back in October
-Finished the year at the top of District 11 for membership goal at 110.53%
-Gained several new members and retained most old members
-Completed several fundraiser events to support programs that assist veterans, military families, youth, and community
-Sponsored the Americanism Essay contest at WestPark Elementary
-Sponsored student from Buckeye Union HS to Girls State
-Collaborated with other veteran organizations to help support their programs
-Collaborated with local high schools and youth programs to coordinate service projects at the Post 53 Home to help educate about the importance of being a good citizen
-Assisted Post 53 at many of their fundraisers and cleanups at the Post Home
-Communicated with city officials, WV Vet Center, and the VA to help find, and share, resources to support veterans in our area

Spent Memorial Day weekend at Fry's on Indian School and Jackrabbit Trail sharing about the American Legion Riders and accepting donations to help us support veteran, youth, and community programs that the American Legion family sponsors. If you are interested in the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, Son's of the American Legion, and/or the American Legion Riders DM me and I'll get you in contact with someone who can help.

We learned about another loss of a veteran that played a big part in helping build the Post 53 Home to what it is today. Endre Mayer passed away this morning in California where he enjoyed being near his family and friends. Endre, and his granddaughter who was in her early 20’s at the time, spearheaded putting in the Hall tiles and dance floor about 7 years ago. That project being completed by volunteers helped to create a much nicer Hall which allowed us to start holding many more events to support our programs and gain more membership. Both Endre and his wife, Sabrina, were actively involved members during their time in Buckeye and we wanted to take this time to honor Endre’s service to Post 53 and to help comfort Sabrina as she is going through this difficult time. Many fond memories of doing good work to support veterans, youth, and community. They moved back to California about 2020, but they continued to support Post 53 and Unit 53 from afar and were very proud of the work being done after they left. Please keep Sabrina and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Arizona Girls State Orientation was held on May 16th at Post 62 in Peoria. Good luck to Unit 53’s delegate, Kyley, from Buckeye Union High School as she heads to U of A the first week of June to join all the other delegates from around the state for this amazing and educational experience!

On this day let us remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice for us to enjoy the freedoms we have. We would like to thank those that stopped by the Poppie table at the Fry’s on Miller on Saturday and Sunday to learn more about the story of the Poppie and donate to support our veteran programs. Thank you to our volunteers from American Legion, Hazelton-Butler Post 53 and American Legion Auxiliary Hazelton-Butler Unit #53 that took the time be at the table over the weekend.

American Legion Auxiliary Hazelton-Butler Unit #53 would like to honor the many years of service that Patsy Cone dedicated to our Unit here in Buckeye, AZ. Patsy passed away in April 2026 and will be honored at a Celebration of Life on June 6, 2026. Patsy was actively involved with Unit 53 over the past decade and dedicated many hours to help at events, prepare food, and promote our programs at info tables in the community. She had a servant heart and will be greatly missed by her family and in the community which she served. Attached are some photos of precious memories with the Post 53 Family the last several years.
