As part of RRI investment in Puerto Rico, the first digipeater has been tested and is ready to ship. The digipeater systems being provided will operate from float cells maintained at full charge. The systems will also detect loss of AC mains power at the communications site. When power is lost, the digipeater transmits a DTMF sequence every 15 minutes until power is restored. A separate receiver and decoder package is also provided, which can receive the alerts for multiple remote locations, thereby ensuring that the RRI and ARES teams are aware of the status of each system.
By building out a robust packet radio network and combining it with the RRI Digital Traffic Network and Winlink gateways, the radio amateurs of Puerto Rico should be well equipped to respond to future disasters in a cohesive and professional manner.
