As Autism Acceptance Month comes to a close, we would like to emphasize the importance of recognizing intersectional identities with autism. Even in 2024, there are still disparities in racial representation in autism research, which leads to disparities in care. By continuing to advocate for ALL neurodivergent people, especially youth, one day all people will receive the same educational, medical, and psychological care.

Today’s entertainment industry continues to improve in terms of representing all identities, however, they sometimes lack full or accurate representation of the character’s experiences. It is important to make films with autistic characters, but it is even more important to cast actors and actresses who have autism and can authentically emulate that experience. Here are a few examples:

1. Madison Bandy as Rene in Loop
2. Kevin Valdez as Louie in Little Voice
3. Kayla Cromer as Matilda on Everything’s Gonna be OK
