From Ray:
"Through teaching at Red Lion Elementary School, I heard a story about a child in the community who was being physically and mentally abused by his biological mother. The biological father abandoned the family when Dennis was only 3. So as a 7-year-old, mom took it out on Dennis: beat him, didn't properly feed him and then basically wanted to get rid of him. She was looking to "unload' him. So, I voluntarily took guardianship. Rags to riches story to say the least. Dennis is well adjusted, excels in school, and is self-motivated to succeed in life. His goal is to become a commercial airline pilot. Believe it or not, Dennis has called me " DAD" since the first time I met him, December of 2018. He has not had any contact with his mother since...my family has adopted him as one of our own, so to speak.
I was diagnosed with Bladder Cancer 5 years ago. My bills are astronomical, and I get zero government support financially for Dennis because it's a voluntary guardianship case, although I am able to claim him on my taxes.
