Perry Cline was an influential lawyer, sheriff, deputy sheriff, deputy jailer, and political leader in Pike County, Kentucky, during the era of the Hatfield-McCoy Feud. In 1858, he inherited a large tract of land in Logan County, Virginia (later West Virginia), from his father and was considered wealthy.

However, by the early 1870s, he was accused of stealing timber from the nearby property of William Anderson โ€œDevil Anseโ€ Hatfield, the leader of the Hatfield clan. A court action ensued. The courtroom decision of 1877 awarded Hatfield all of Perry's land in Logan County as damages. This incident marked the beginning of Perry's hatred for the Hatfields in general, and Devil Anse in particular.

Perry relocated to Pikeville, Kentucky, where he soon established himself with influential powers and developed a close relationship with a relative, "Ranโ€™l" McCoy and the clan he controlled. After Perry became deputy sheriff โ€” at the height of the Hatfield-McCoy vendetta โ€” he became instrumental in obtaining warrants to arrest members of the Hatfields, with the intention of hauling them into Kentucky to face trial.

Perry was considered a prime force in keeping the feud alive.

The image of gun ownership in America has been white, rural and Republican, but that's been changing as more liberals and minorities have been buying guns, especially after the 2024 election.
