Officials in Coweta County are preparing for a major land acquisition effort tied to new energy infrastructure, as Georgia Power moves forward with plans to support large-scale data center development in the region. The project includes the construction of a 35-mile transmission line intended to meet growing electricity demand.
The plan is expected to affect more than 330 private properties, including the full acquisition and demolition of 21 homes. The transmission line is connected to “Project Sail,” a proposed hyperscale data center campus spanning approximately 829 acres, with nine buildings totaling up to 4.34 million square feet and an estimated power demand of around 900 megawatts.
Georgia Power has stated it will first attempt to negotiate voluntary purchases and easements with property owners. However, the company has acknowledged that it may use eminent domain authority if agreements cannot be reached. Homeowners in the affected areas have raised concerns about the process, citing limited options once eminent domain is invoked.
The development reflects a broader trend across the United States, where utilities and local governments are expanding grid infrastructure to support rapidly increasing electricity demand driven by large data centers, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence operations.
