Black women, we see you. We see the sacrifices you make, the battles you fight every day, and the joy you bring to the world. Where would the world be without the brilliance and ingenuity of black women, whose contributions continue to shape the world we live in today. This Woman's History Month, we honor the women who moved us and help us advance. Women who inspire the next generation of girls and women to be bold, to stand up for what they believe in, and to follow their dream. Black women: When you win, we all win. This month and always, we support you, we appreciate you, and we celebrate YOU. Ebony Knight-Tennell

During Monday's Board of Trustees meeting, the local chapter of the NAACP was recognized for their support of students in Bryan ISD and as a faith-based partner with Sadberry Intermediate School in Bryan ISD.

During the presentation, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Brian Merrell, who is a member of the local NAACP, called the group part of the fabric of the community and a gift to the district during the presentation, citing their decades of work, support and accountability. As a partner with Sadberry Intermediate School, they greet students in the mornings, take care of the teachers and support the school during testing days.

"It's with great honor and privilege to present these guys with this award," Sadberry Intermediate School Principal Alfred Scott said.

An example of their support, Dr. Merrell said, was a field trip they sponsored to San Antonio following an MLK Day essay contest.

"They're really imparting in the next generation to make sure that we've got students and young adults turning into adults who are advocates in this community," Dr. Merrell said. "We're better because of that."

: The NAACP is suing Texas over a new electoral map that strips Black voters of their political power.

Filed with the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, our lawsuit accuses Texas of racially motivated gerrymandering to silence Black communities ahead of next year's midterms.

“The state’s intent here is to reduce the members of Congress who represent Black communities, and that, in and of itself, is unconstitutional.” — Derrick Johnson
